We love to read at Throckley Primary!
Fri 27 Sep 2019We love reading at Throckley Primary School!
Reading is such an important skill; its value can never be underestimated – a gateway to so many opportunities. Reading and books have such high profile in our school. We love to talk about books and authors and to share our love of reading! We have some exciting reading incentives and opportunities in school this year; you will notice a real focus in school on reading for pleasure and enjoyment. Please see below for the latest reading news:
Mrs Giblin’s cosy lunchtime book club! Every Tuesday lunchtime, Mrs Giblin will be in our wonderful school library doing what she enjoys most - reading! All children are invited to join her and to choose a story of their own or to join in with a shared story time. Lexia will also be available for children who would like to spend more time trying to reach the next level.
Lexia - are you up for the challenge? With four weeks left of this half term, we are challenging all children from Y1 to Y6 to accrue four hours of Lexia time before 25th October. All children have at least 30 minutes of Lexia in school each week, so another 30 minutes at home will mean that they will smash their target. There's a prize for everyone who makes it! Remember, children can access Lexia on Tuesday lunchtimes in the library, if they wish.
The Hall of Fame! Each week, we will be choosing a reading, writing and maths hero from the Lower School and Upper School to join the Hall of Fame. Their photo will be displayed for all to see; a great way to celebrate achievement! Reading heroes could be selected for any reading effort or success: super home reading; wonderful work in class; sharing a story with friends; trying a new author - you name it!
Share your favourite book! Finally, we are going to be revamping some of our displays in the library in order to celebrate the favourite stories and authors loved by children and staff in school. If your child has a favourite book they'd like to share, we'd love to see pictures of them reading it! If you would like to send in a photo, please either send a hard copy in their bookbag (don't forget to add your child's name on the back!) or email a photo to admin@throckleyprim.newcastle.sch.uk. Staff will be joining in too so we will all be able to look at the display and get ideas for our next read!

Year 6 Walk Smart Training
Fri 20 Sep 2019As part of the PSHE curriculum, our Year 6 classes took part in Walk Smart training this week with the Road Safety Team from Newcastle City Council. As the children in Year 6 become more independent, it is important for them to learn to use the roads in their community safely. This training will also ensure that they are safe when traveling to secondary school next year and when they are out and about with their friends. Be sure to ask your children to tell you about what they have learned! -
Walk To School Event
Fri 20 Sep 2019Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Walk to School event this morning. We all had a lovely time and everyone arrived at school refreshed and ready to start the day. The children who attend breakfast club joined in with the walk by taking a morning stroll around the school grounds. Special thanks go to our local community police who helped us to walk safely to school and to Sainsburys who provided us with our meeting point. We had not planned the event to coincide with the world wide climate action which is taking place today, but we are pleased that our walk to school fits in with the work that we all need to do to reduce global warming. -

Tour of Britain Trip
Fri 13 Sep 2019A group of Throckley children had the opportunity to visit the Tour of Britain finish line this week. The children got to pretend to be racing cyclists and were able to ride on the race track and cycle across the finish line before watching the main competitors finish their race. They also got to try out a career as an ITV sports presenter and talk to police officers about the different jobs that are available in the police. Thank you to Cycling Britain for inviting us to participate in this exciting local sporting event. -
Allotment Club's Prize-winning Leeks.
Fri 13 Sep 2019Our allotment club has been taking part in an exciting leek growing project with The Grange Day Centre in Throckley. Mr Blackburn donated some tiny leek plants to us back in the spring and the allotment club has nurtured them until they have grown into huge leeks which were then entered into The Grange’s annual leek show. Our leeks weren’t quite as big as the ones in these photographs, but they did win a special prize of £50 which will be used to further develop our allotment club. Following the show, Mr Elliott and the allotment club children cooked some delicious leek and potato soup and shared it with their parents/carers at lunchtime today. They also put together a display with some of the other produce that they have grown. Mr Elliott is continuing with the allotment club this year, so lots of our children will have the opportunity to work in the outdoors, grow and then taste their own food. Thank you to The Grange and to Mr Blackburn for inviting the school to be part of this community project. -

The performance was sponsored by Northumbria Water and the pupils learned all about ways to save water and why it's important to use water wisely. Ask your children about ways you can save water at home! -
Air Quality Monitor on Hexham Road
Fri 13 Sep 2019Last summer we received a grant from the NCC Healthy Pupil Capital Fund for an air quality monitor and it has now been installed on one of the lamp posts across from our school gates. We will start to receive data from the monitor soon and the children will be able to use it in their science and PSHE lessons. Changes in air pollution at different times of day will help us to measure the effects of our walk to school programme and will show the children the difference they can make to the air quality in Throckley when they choose to walk or cycle to school. -
Our Wonderful Learners
Fri 06 Sep 2019Following on from our successful LORIC – Skills for Life focus, we have been working on how we can develop skills that will support our children in their school life and beyond. Our school staff has worked with a learning consultant to develop OWL (Our Wonderful Learners). This is a set of strategies that children can draw upon in different learning situations, with prompts and resources to support them in being successful. Keep an eye on Parent App where you will be notified of your child’s OWL achievement stars!
