Earthquake in Year 4!
Fri 31 Jan 2020As part of their enquiry question, ‘Just how powerful is our natural world?’, Y4 have conducted an experiment which involved designing and building a structure that was ‘earthquake-proof’. Using what they have learned about architectural techniques which help buildings to survive an earthquake, they designed their structures to have wide bases, X shapes and deep foundations. They then tested how their structures performed during a simulated earthquake which was actually a tray full of jelly that wobbled like the earth’s surface. If your child is in Y4, be sure to ask them about the techniques that they used and how their structure survived the earthquake! -
Science and Nature Signs in the KS2 Yard
Fri 31 Jan 2020We would like to thank Engie, the company who manages our building, for providing us with some lovely new science and nature posters to decorate our KS2 yard. The posters include information about mammals, birds, insects and trees and will help the children to learn about the wildlife and plants that live and grow in the woodland surrounding the school. The children worked with Mrs McDonald during break time to decide where the posters should hang and Paul, our caretaker, will be putting them up over half term. -
Digital Leaders Event
Fri 31 Jan 2020On Thursday, many schools in our Outer West Learning Trust participated in a Digital Leader Event at Milecastle Primary School. Some children from Years 3 and 4 attended with Miss Richardson to represent Throckley Primary. The purpose of the day was to create a short film about online safety that will be shown across all our Trust schools on Safer Internet Day (Tuesday 11th January). The children split into several groups and each team was responsible for writing, rehearsing and recording important information about Safer Internet Day including the upcoming ‘Bunting Challenge.’ Applying their wonderful technology skills, the children used a range of software on the iPads to edit their videos, including Green Screen and iMovie, which allowed any final details to be added. All the children had a wonderful day and enjoyed the opportunity to meet other children within the OWL Trust. Keep an eye out for our Safer Internet Day video, which will soon be available on the website! -

Building a House of Sticks in Reception
Fri 24 Jan 2020This week our Reception classes went into the woods to build a house of sticks like one of the little pigs from our story, ‘The Three Little Pigs’. As there aren't many pigs in Throckley, we decided our house could be used to provide shelter for squirrels in order to help celebrate Squirrel Appreciation Day which took place on Tuesday. We had great fun collecting sticks without thorns and then using them to build a shelter. We then tried sitting in it to see if it would make a nice house for the squirrels and we think it will make a very cosy house for them!
While some children were building, other children had a PSHE lesson learning basic first aid with Mr Metcalf. The children found out about the supplies that are kept inside of a first aid kit and how they are used. They even practised making an arm sling for one of their friends!

Year 5 IT Lesson with GEM Education
Fri 24 Jan 2020Year 5 were very excited to welcome Jason from GEM Education to school on Wednesday. He introduced the children to several pieces of IT equipment and modeled how to use them. They then worked through a carousel of activities in the hall. Throughout the afternoon, Year 5 worked with Spheros, Microbits, Crumbles, Ozobots, Makey Makeys and even drones! Each station offered a different type of IT experience so all the children had great fun developing their understanding of computing in a very short space of time. After school Jason delivered further training to the teachers in their staff meeting. Now the children and staff are really looking forward to using the Microbits and Crumbles again as part of their IT projects in the summer term! -
Daily Dashboards in all Classes
Fri 24 Jan 2020We have been developing our curriculum here at Throckley. Learning for us is about so much more than what is covered in our exciting lessons; we want children to be tuned into the world around them and to have a sound understanding of how they are connected to the wider world. For that reason, we have implemented a 'Daily Dashboard' in all classes each day. The dashboard includes dates, seasons, weather as well as interesting local, national and international events which help to develop the children's cultural understanding. It would be fantastic if you could ask children what they have learned from their dashboards and discuss topical events which are age appropriate. The Newsround website is a good place to find news which is appropriate for children. Perhaps they could even add topical pieces of news to their class's dashboard! -
Visiting Musician
Fri 17 Jan 2020This week we had a visiting musician in the Key stage 2 classes. Mr Kirkpatrick is a trumpet player and he very kindly gave up his time to come and give a small presentation about the trumpet, pocket trumpet and bugle. The children loved learning about how the sounds were made and had many questions that Mr Kirkpatrick was very keen to answer. We hope to have more visiting musicians in the near future so that the children have more opportunities to hear live music being performed. -
Password Safety Raps in Year 5
Fri 17 Jan 2020In computing this term, we are looking at digital literacy. This week’s lesson involved us talking about what features can make a safe password and what other features mean that a password is not as strong. We used an app on the iPads to check how safe our made up passwords from the lesson were. We also checked the safety of some of our own passwords that we use regularly for our apps and games at home. In order to share our learning and to help keep younger children safe on the internet, we then wrote and recorded password raps for the children in year 3. -
Curious Beasts PSHE Workshop in Year 3
Fri 17 Jan 2020On Monday, North East Wellbeing and Life and Limb Puppets delivered a workshop called ‘Curious Beasts’ to our Year 3 children. The workshop aims to develop social and emotional wellbeing through helping children to think about and understand their feelings. Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and the puppets- they were amazing! The workshop was narrated by an 'Explorer' (a professional actor and puppeteer) who was on the hunt for 5 mysterious puppet creatures hiding deep in a jungle of trees and rocks. The children were asked to think about how similar they are to each puppet creature. A wonderful start to the week!
