Outstanding Outcomes at Throckley Primary School
Fri 30 Nov 2018Mrs Stuart has sent out a letter of celebration today about the 2017/18 results. Please see below for the text of the letter:
30th November, 2018
Dear Parent/Carer,
Outstanding Outcomes at Throckley Primary School!
I am writing to share with you our outstanding results from the Key Stage Two 2018 statutory assessments which have placed us overall in the top 1% of schools nationally. These results are based on both attainment (the scores that the pupils have achieved in their KS2 SATs) and value added progress (how much progress the children have made since their KS1 SATs).
This is such an amazing achievement which we want to celebrate with our children, families and whole school community.
Reading
* 93% of children achieved the expected standard or better in reading (18% above National Average).
* 71% of children at greater depth in reading (43% above the National Average). This places us second in the city for those working at the higher standard.
* The average scaled score attained by pupils in reading was 112.1 points (possible range 80-120). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
* Average progress made by pupils in reading was +8.2 (possible range -10 to +10). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
Writing
* 93% of children achieved the expected standard or better in writing (15% above National Average).
* 54% of children at greater depth in writing (34% above the National Average). This is an amazing achievement which places us first in the city for those working at the higher standard.
* The average scaled score attained by pupils in writing was 107.1 points (possible range 80-120). This places us in the 2nd percentile in the country.
* Average progress made by pupils in writing was +7.2 (possible range -10 to +10). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
Mathematics
* 93% of children achieved the expected standard or better in maths (17% above National Average).
* 64% of children at greater depth in maths (30% above the National Average). This is an amazing achievement which places us first in the city for those working at the higher standard.
* The average scaled score attained by pupils in maths was 110.6 points (possible range 80-120). This places us in the 2nd percentile in the country.
* Average progress made by pupils in maths was +7.2 (possible range -10 to +10). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling)
* 93% of children achieved the expected standard or better in GPS (15% above National Average).
* 82% of children at greater depth in GPS (48% above the National Average). This is an amazing achievement which places us highest in the city for those working at the higher standard.
* The average scaled score attained by pupils in GPS was 114.3 points (possible range 80-120). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
* Average progress made by pupils in GPS was +9.4 (possible range -10 to +10). This places us in the 1st percentile in the country.
N.B. Test percentile scores are commonly reported on many standardised assessment tests to allow comparison against other schools in the country. Percentile literally means per hundred. If a school scores at the 5th percentile on a measure, that school has scored at least as well as, or better than, 5 percent of schools on that test. The smaller the percentile the better the performance of a school.
These fantastic results are a testament to our amazing staff and governors who are dedicated and committed to the ensuring we continue to provide the best possible educational opportunities to fulfil each and every child’s potential.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for your ongoing support to our school and to your children, who make Throckley Primary school so special and such an exciting and vibrant place to work and learn.
Yours sincerely
Julie Stuart, Head Teacher

Y5 & Y6 at Sports Hall Athletics Competition
Fri 30 Nov 2018On Tuesday a team of Year 5 and 6 children attended a sports hall athletics competition at Walker activity dome. Miss Thorpe was exceptionally proud of the children's effort, team spirit, and behaviour when representing the school. Many of them placed first in their individual heats and their times will be compared with others from across the city. We hope to find out the results in the coming weeks. -
School Allotment & Newcastle Uni Eco Society
Fri 30 Nov 2018Our School Council is working with the Eco Society at Newcastle University to improve our school allotment so that it is ready for planting in the Spring. School Council had a look around the allotment and realised that the first thing it needed was a big tidy! The Eco Society came into school last Saturday and spent several hours weeding, digging and clearing out the greenhouse. The allotment now looks so much better! School Council are busy gathering ideas from all of the classes about what they would like to see in the allotment. They will be sharing these ideas with the Eco Society who will use them to make the allotment a great place for children of all ages. -
Active Lives Children & Young People Survey
Fri 23 Nov 2018Last summer the children in Y2, Y4 and Y6 took part in the Active Lives Survey. We are pleased with the results, particularly for PE. 100% of children in the Y2 class and 95% of the children in Y4 & Y6 reported that they enjoyed taking part in the two hours of PE that lessons that they have each week. The children also report that they enjoy participating in the wide variety of sports that are available to play on the yard at break times and during lunch and after school clubs. We will be offering 13 different breakfast, lunch and after school sports clubs in the Spring Term for children in years 1 - 6, so even more children will be able to find a sporting activity that they enjoy. The photographs below are showing the children enjoying PE lessons in Gymnastics, Outdoor Adventure Activities and Netball along with a spooky haunted house obstacle course. -
Y4 Working with Newcastle University Eco Society
Fri 23 Nov 2018As part of the Science Curriculum, Year 4 welcomed Miriam, Robin, Levi and their plant Gunther from the Eco Society at Newcastle University! The children worked in groups to help Gunther by thinking of things that they could do to improve the Earth’s environment. They discussed animals, plants, the ground beneath our feet and the air we breathe. They found out that people are creating more carbon dioxide then plants can cope with because of farming, manufacturing and car usage. They were full of enthusiasm for the project and they created fabulous posters which show all the ways that they can help to improve the environment and save energy. Some of their ideas included:
- walking, cycling or scootering to school,
- playing outside rather than on electrical devices;
- eating less meat because of the gases the animals release into the atmosphere;
- reusing/recycling products to create less demand;
- picking up litter so that people can enjoy being outside in our local community.

Kindness Week 2018
Fri 16 Nov 2018Kindness Week at Throckley Primary, Theme: Choose Respect
At Throckley Primary School, we mark the national Anti-bullying Week by spending an entire week learning about Kindness. We kicked off the week with Odd Socks Day and we ended with our annual Children in Need non-uniform and fundraising day. Here are just a few things that the classes have been doing this week:
- Nursery made a collage of hearts, talked about friendship, made kindness cards for their classmates and learned about respecting friends by reading the story of Elmer.
- Reception spent the week being kind to Harold the Bear. Every time that someone said something kind to Harold, a happiness ball was added to his bucket. At the end of the week, the bucket was full and the children found out how powerful it is when you say kind words. They then made powerful, kind word superhero masks.
- Year 1 learned about being kind on the yard and how important it is to ask someone to play when they look sad or are on their own.
- Year 2 learned about opinions and that it is fine for people to disagree. They learned about how to disagree with someone in a kind and respectful manner. They also used lots of ingredients to make a ’good friend’ spell.
- Year 3 have been learning how to have a friendly debates and how to respect the opinions of others. They have practised their debating skills using opinions of their own.
- Year 4 watched a Sesame Street video about respect. The video gave them lots of ideas about how to show respect to others.
- Year 5 watched the ‘Bully a Plant’ video. They then made two boxes - one with kind comments that they had heard people say to each other and one with comments that weren’t kind. The whole class has agreed to only add comments to the kind box, not the unkind box.
- Year 6 worked with the theme "Choose Respect" and focused on how we can be respectful when online. To support this topic across the school, they created their own multiple choice games using 'Scratch'. They worked respectfully (of course!) with a partner to follow a set of instructions and create complex algorithms. They then debugged their work so that the final game was playable!
Thank you to all of the parents/carers who have support the activities this week. We are pleased to announce that we have raised over £625 for Children in Need! Photographs from the day can be found on the back of the newsletter and on the website.

Junior Wardens Assembly
Fri 16 Nov 2018Congratulations to Year 6 who have all completed their Junior Wardens project with Your Homes Newcastle and Newcastle City Council. The whole school saw them receive their certificates in Assembly today. The leaders of the project complimented the children on their excellent behaviour and respectful manner when carrying out their duties in the community. The children have come up with some good ideas for improving local issues such as graffiti, litter, dog soiling and housing. Each child was given a goodie bag and Lucy and Hollie won the poster competition and the prize of an Intu voucher. Mr Kidger was in the assembly and he is very proud of this year group and how they have represented our school. -

Pasta King Tasting Session
Fri 09 Nov 2018asta King visited our dining hall today and gave all of the children the opportunity to try some of their delicious and healthy sauces. Chartwells will be serving a Pasta King dish daily, which means that the children now have four hot meal choices per day. We are sending home paper copies of the new menus today. If your child would like to try school meals, please speak to the school office. -
Ipad Workshop in Year 5
Fri 09 Nov 2018The school has invested in an additional set of class ipads and in a special IT lesson, Y5 received some digital training from an Apple Education Trainer. The children learned how to use two new apps which allowed them to create a newspaper front page. They also found out to edit original photos and super impose Harry Potter characters on to our school grounds! The children thoroughly enjoyed their session and found it very funny turning some of our teachers into Harry Potter! Thank you to Chris from KRCS for delivering this training.
