Easter Countdown Attendance Challenge
Fri 28 Feb 2020The children loved our Countdown to Spring Attendance Challenge, so we have decided to run a special Countdown to Easter challenge for the next 25 days. Mrs Edmundson has designed a lovely Easter display board with three baskets that each represent one area of the school (Early Years, Lower School and Upper School). This board will be used to track the attendance prizes. Children can win the following throughout the challenge:
- A prize and a certificate for one 100% pupil in each class over the 5 weeks. This will be drawn out of a hat.
- A prize and a certificate for the most improved attender in each class chosen by class teachers.
- A daily spot prize (one per phase) for those pupils who are in school on that day. This will be drawn out of a hat and winners of these spot prizes will be displayed on the baskets.

Mayan Hieroglyphic Printing in Year 5
Fri 28 Feb 2020After learning about Mayan hieroglyphics, Y5 emulated their style in order to design their own. The children then used cardboard and string to create their own Mayan print blocks which they then painted and used to block print their final piece of artwork. The children also used a different type of print block made from polystyrene and acrylic paints. They drew and pierced their polystyrene with clay tools and then painted their print printing blocks using acrylic paint and rollers. -
PTFA Pancake Day
Fri 28 Feb 2020Thank you to our PTFA for running a fantastic pancake day event! The pancakes were delicious and the toppings were amazing. We so enjoyed having so many of our parents and carers in the dining hall spending time with their children in school. This event has raised £130 for the PTFA funds and we will soon be sharing with you the plans that the PTFA have for projects, events and fund raising in the future. If you are interested in joining the PTFA, please speak to Miss Thorpe, Miss Sewell, the Office or to one of the parents who is already involved in the PTFA. Thank you to Sainsburys and Silver Spoon for supporting this event with their kind donations. -
Textile Design Club
Fri 14 Feb 2020Some pupils from Years 3 & 4 have taken part in a sewing and textiles club during their lunchtimes this half term and they have designed some amazing and functional drawstring bags. They have used tie dye to make their fabric colourful, created their own felt patterns to decorate their creations and used wool to make pom-poms for the string. They also made some excellent woven heart fabric table settings to celebrate Valentine's day this week. Well done! -
Throckley Basketball Champions!
Fri 14 Feb 2020Throckley are champions once again! After a few close matches in the early stages, Throckley emerged the winners of the OWL KS2 Basketball competition. The team wowed staff and other teams with their quick passing skills and some impressively accurate shots. All players were excellent sportspeople and made the school extremely proud. Well done!
Following the school's success at the Dodgeball competition before Christmas, this means that Throckley Primary sits at the top of the OWL PE competition leader board with a 4 point lead.

Learn to Play Tennis
Fri 14 Feb 2020Pupils from Years 3-6 took part in a tennis challenge event at Sunderland's specialist tennis centre on Wednesday! Mr Elliott and Mrs Wright were so impressed with how the pupils conducted themselves. They had such an amazing morning and it was a real pleasure to see how much they enjoyed themselves developing not only their physical skills, but also their social skills and confidence. Physical Education and sport are such powerful vehicles for developing well-rounded pupils. We definitely have a few budding tennis stars in our midst! -
Safer Internet Day 2020
Fri 14 Feb 2020We have had a busy week of exploring and learning about how we can all work together for a better internet. All of the children have watched a special internet safety film which was made by some of the children in the OWL schools. This was followed by a whole school Bunting Challenge. Each class had a group discussion about their similarities and differences and then the children designed a bunting flag while thinking about the following questions: Who likes or does similar things to you online? Who likes or does different things? Is it OK to like different things? How does what you do online represent who you are? The individual flags have been joined together and we now have Safer Internet Day bunting to decorate our upstairs IT Suites. We are pleased that so many of you were able to join us for the parent/carer event and we hope that the session was both enjoyable and useful. It is so important that we all work together to make the internet safer for children. -
BEE Netball Event
Fri 07 Feb 2020Children from Years 5 & 6 competed in a BEE netball event at Walker Activity Dome and represented the school extremely well with great attitudes and sportsmanship on display. Although we didn’t make it to the next round, we played some impressive netball at times, which was commented on by the umpire. Well done to all involved! -
Duffy Football League
Fri 07 Feb 2020Our penultimate Duffy league was a tough one; the wind made playing any kind of real football a challenge! The boys performed well under the circumstances and after four very tight games, came away with one win, one draw and a two defeats. Roll on March for a final outing of the season; well done boys! -
Top Sportability
Fri 07 Feb 2020Some of our children visited Percy Hedley School for a fun-packed morning of activities such as: Boccia, Sitting Volleyball and New-Age Curling. The children all had fantastic smiles throughout and clearly had a great time. They performed so well that they scored enough points to be invited to the county finals! A huge well done!
