GEM Education Working in Years 4 & 5
Fri 07 Feb 2020Year 4 was very lucky to have Mr Hughes working with our class to look at online safety and discuss body image. First we looked at a range of online social media apps and what’s good vs what’s bad about using them. The main part of the session was spent looking at how photos are changed by people before they post them online. Having looked at some examples and discussed what people had changed and why, the children then had a go at changing photos on the iPads. This hands-on experience showed them how easily photos can be manipulated to not portray reality and how we should be happy with the way we naturally look rather than feeling pressured to look like photos that aren’t real.
Year 5 worked with GEM education and looked at how we stay safe online and be a good digital citizen. Children watched a number of videos which had important messages about being kind to one another on an online community.

Time to Talk Day
Fri 07 Feb 20206th February was Time to Talk Day – a day when everyone at school was encouraged to have a conversation about mental health. We displayed posters around school to encourage conversations in an attempt to break the stigma and raise awareness of mental health. Children in Years 1 & 2 talked to their peers to find out what can make them feel happier at times when they feel sad. Y3 had a class assembly around the topic of mental health and discussed why it is just as important as our physical health. Y5 teachers encouraged the children to write down any worries/thoughts that they have that they would like to talk about. Each week they are going to look at a couple and generate talk as a whole class. Y6 took part in a true or false quiz to help to dispel a few popular misconceptions about mental health. -
NSPCC Number Day 2020
Fri 07 Feb 2020Nursery completed lots of number-based activities, introducing children to the numerals in different contexts and finished the day with a number song disco!
Reception made number hats and played a selection of number-related games, which covered recognising numerals, matching amounts and numerals.
Year 1 celebrated number day by completing number themed art, PE and ICT. They also took part in some extra number challenges.
Year 2 played a game of ‘who wants to be mathionaire’ and then did some practical investigations using the multiplication skills we have been developing within our lessons.
Year 3 took part in a Mary Anning themed code breaking maths lesson which linked to their learning in Science. They worked out the value of a range of 'curiosities' and then used these to solve various maths calculations. Who will be the chief code-breaker?!
Year 4 carried out two investigations to answer the following questions: Can taller people jump further? and Is your arm span the same as your height? Children designed their own methods for finding the answers, recording and presenting the information and we analysed which methods are the most accurate.
Year 5 designed playground games for the KS1 and KS2 yards using chalk to create their games on the ground for the whole school to play! They also carried out a fraction treasure hunt.
Year 6 spent time unwinding the mysteries of Suguru: simple to understand, complex to solve! Literally meaning 'number groups' in Japanese, solvers aimed to fill a grid with numbers. Using algebra, the children determined the highest value digit that can fill each cell before arranging them so that no identical digits touch horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The children also explored the significance of the numbers in their lives and created a unique poem called ‘My Life in Numbers’.
