Cycling Progression at Throckley Primary School
Fri 29 Mar 2019At Throckley Primary we believe that learning to safely ride a bike is an important life skill. For many young people, cycling provides an inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly-way to get to school and to other activities. Children across our school have several opportunities to learn to ride bikes, to develop their skills and to practice riding safely on roads in the local community.
Children in our school start learning to cycle when they are in Nursery & Reception using balance bikes during curricular PE. They can then further develop their skills during lunchtime balance bike clubs when they are in Years 1 & 2. Bikeability Levels 1 & 2 take place in Years 4 & 5, with an optional ‘Learn to Ride’ session for children who have not yet mastered riding a bike. Bikeability L1 is delivered within school grounds and teaches basic skills such as balance and control. Bikeability L2 takes place on quiet roads in Throckley and gives children the confidence to cycle in traffic for short journeys, such as cycling to school.
Newcastle City Council has received national funding to develop safe routes for cycling across the city and we want our children to be able to use these future cycle ways as confident and skilled cyclists.

Year 4 Throckley Village Group Litter Pick
Fri 29 Mar 2019As part of their ongoing environmental work, Year 4 went litter picking in the local community on Wednesday. We collected twelve bags of rubbish and put it where it is supposed to be - in the bin! Although the children were shocked by how much rubbish they found, they had a great time and even rescued some ladybirds from the litter before it was binned. To say thank you for their hard work, the doctor's surgery gave them some biscuits which they enjoyed back in school once they had washed their hands. Thank you very much to Anne Whittaker and her team at the Throckley Village Group for helping us to organise the event and for providing litter pickers for the children to use. -

Newcastle Schools Achievement Awards
Fri 22 Mar 2019On Thursday 21st, the Civic Centre hosted the Newcastle Achievement Awards to celebrate, amongst others, the outstanding effort of two Throckley students. Nadine (Y4) and Yamin (Y6). Mr Reid Milligan (Y4) and Miss King (representing Miss Dockey in Y6) were delighted to see the pride of these modest children enjoying the public recognition of their achievements. Nadine has excelled in her reading thanks to her astonishing dedication; while Yamin’s determination to master his English has led to success in all aspects of his learning. What a spectacular night! -
PE & Sport at Throckley Primary
Fri 22 Mar 2019We are very proud of our PE and sport provision at Throckley Primary School. A dedicated team of teachers and support staff (Miss Thorpe, Mr Elliott, Mr Meyer and Mrs Cookson) work to ensure that the children have fantastic PE lessons and extra-curricular opportunities for participation and competition in a wide variety of sports. Our school ensures that all children from Acorns to Year 6 have two active 60 minute lessons of PE per week plus 30 minutes of exercise daily through activities on the yard such as Golden Mile, football or basketball. As part of the Greenwich Hospital housing development, our outdoor sport facilities have been expanded and improved. This will enable us to continue to improve the confidence, health and fitness of all of the children who attend our school. -

Reception Visit to Broxfield Farm
Fri 15 Mar 2019Our Reception classes had a fantastic day at Broxfield Farm. Mr Thompson led the activities during the visit and the children had some wonderful experiences. The children:
- Discussed the different seasons on the farm and how they help the crops grow.
- Found out about how helpful the worms can be and went for a little worm hunt.
- Picked flowers (weeds!) from the field. They had to try and find a purple, blue and white flower.
- Visited the different cows and found out how Mr Thompson cares for them.
- Looked at the features of the cows. Mr Thompson wanted them to look at their bright eyes, long lashes, very long tongues, ears and hair styles.
- Fed some of the cows in the big shed. It’s their cosy winter home but the children didn’t think it was very warm!
- Helped Mr Thompson by making some fantastic scarecrows to scare away the birds from his seeds.
Miss Liddle and Miss McGregor were not surprised that so many of the children fell asleep on the journey home after such a busy day!

STEAM Week (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics)
Fri 15 Mar 2019As part of British Science Week, children across the school have been taking part in learning activities from the STEAM subjects using the themes of transport and journeys. Here are just a few examples: researching pivotal scientists, using Google Maps and GPS to solve a transport problem, solving an engineering problem, using bus, train and airline timetables to plan a journey, measuring a tractor, designing a mural about animals and their habitats from places where they have traveled. These mural designs will be used in the Summer term to create a whole school mural in the KS2 yard. The photographs below show the following activities:
- Reception children measuring the height and width of a tractor.
- Year 6 on a science scavenger hunt around the school to explore real life science. They investigated different locations and considered how they linked to science objectives from the curriculum. They then came up with a question that children could answer linking to the specific area we explored.
- Year 1 on a 'Senses' walk around the school grounds. They thought about the ground underneath their feet and all of the things that are there when they are going on a journey on foot. They used cutouts of their feet to find out all of the things that are within one of their footprints.
We will be sharing all of this fantastic work with you in a big display in the rotunda during the parent evenings next week. Please visit the display with your children. Science Ambassadors from Years 5 & 6 will be available to discuss STEAM Week and to answer your questions. Thank you to Lloyd Ltd of Throckley for letting us borrow a tractor for the day!
