Letter from DfE and Public Health about child illnesses and attendance and school
Dear Parents/Carers,
This letter was addressed to the Head Teacher at school, but the DfE have requested that we share it with you.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Julia Brown and Mrs Lynsey Giblin
Co-head Teachers
Dear Head Teachers and Trust Leaders,
As you begin to welcome children and young people back for a new school year, we have been asked by the Department for Education (DfE) to provide you with a clinical and public health perspective on mild illnesses and school attendance.
We are aware that the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some parents to feel less confident with assessing whether their child is well enough to be in school so we have laid out some information which we hope you will find helpful.
There is wide agreement among health professionals and educational professionals that school attendance is vital to the life chances of children and young people. Being in school improves health, wellbeing and socialisation throughout the life course. The greatest benefits come from children and young people attending school regularly.
It is usually appropriate for parents and carers to send their children to school with mild respiratory illnesses. This would include general cold symptoms: a minor cough, runny nose or sore throat. However, children should not be sent to school if they have a temperature of 38°C or above. We would encourage you to share the NHS ‘Is my child too ill for school?’ guidance with parents and carers in your schools and communities which has further information.
In addition to respiratory illnesses, we are aware that more children may be absent from school due to symptoms of anxiety than before the pandemic. Worry and mild or moderate anxiety, whilst sometimes difficult emotions, can be a normal part of growing up for many children and young people. Being in school can often help alleviate the underlying issues. A prolonged period of absence is likely to heighten a child’s anxiety about attending in the future, rather than reduce it. DfE has published useful guidance on mental health issues affecting a pupil’s attendance and those who are experiencing persistent symptoms can be encouraged to access additional support.
Thank you for your efforts so far to facilitate immunisation sessions within schools. As we head into winter, encouraging high uptake of seasonal flu vaccination and routine immunisations for eligible children and young people will help to reduce absences and the disruption they cause.
You, and the teachers you lead, are already supporting families to build up children’s confidence to attend school regularly. The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) recently approved 5 principles to promote school attendance. We hope this guidance will support GPs in having sensitive and reassuring conversations with parents, carers and pupils.
Thank you and your colleagues for your continued commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
Yours sincerely,

Proposal to amend the timings of the school day
Dear Parents/Carers,
The Department for Education (DfE) has recently set a requirement that state-funded schools deliver a school week of a minimum of 32.5 hours for children in Years 1-6. We welcome this statutory change, which will support excellent outcomes for all by giving our children additional time in school. In order to achieve a 32.5 hour school week for children in Years 1-6, we propose to increase the school day by 10 minutes for these children as per below:
School start time (all children): 8.45am
School finish time (Y1-6): 3.15pm
School finish time (Reception): 3.10pm
School finish time (Nursery): 3.10pm
We will be using this additional time at the start of the day to support children’s wellbeing. Extra time first thing will allow for a more mindful start, where children can ‘check in’ with their emotional wellbeing, and use their self-regulation strategies to ensure a good start to the new day. Once children are settled into school, the additional time will then be spent on essential phonics and reading lessons, allowing greater consolidation of key skills. Please note that this earlier start to the school day will not affect the morning Well Being and Bright Starts clubs.
We will be introducing this change from 9th January 2023. We trust that this will give you time to make any adjustments to your morning routine.
You can find DfE national guidance on the minimum expectation on length of the school week here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1063520/Minimum_expectation_for_length_of_school_week_-__information_note.pdf
We are always grateful for the support we receive from parents, carers and the wider school community and we thank you in advance for your understanding on this matter. As always, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Yours faithfully,
Mrs J. Stuart

Harvest Assembly and Donations
We will be celebrating Harvest with a special assembly on 13th October 2022. During this assembly, we will be reflecting on how lucky we are to have a harvest which provides us with lovely, healthy food. We are supporting the Newcastle West End Food Bank again this year and we are collecting donations which will help people in our local community who need support with the cost of food. If you are able to, please think about adding a little extra to your weekly shop and picking up one or more of these items: tinned fruit, tinned custard, tinned meat, tinned fish, jam, cereal, juice, pasta, pasta sauce or rice. Donations can be sent to school until Friday 14th October and they will be delivered to the food bank before half term.
Join us for coffee and a biscuit on Wednesday 19th October
We are really looking forward to our first coffee morning in over three years! Come to the front door and sign in after your children have gone into school. The PTFA will be joining us, and this will be a great opportunity to meet some of the school staff and other parents/carers. We hope to see you there!

Curriculum Spotlight
It has been another busy and exciting week in school. Yesterday was National Poetry Day - a Throckley favourite, and this year was no exception! The theme was 'The Environment' so we took the opportunity to once again discuss with all children the importance of sustainability and looking after our planet. Children across school put their poetry hats on and have written poems which will be entered into a Greenpeace competition which invited children to explore the beauty of the natural world. In school we have loved creating lively limericks, heartful haikus and polished prose - please do check out our Twitter feed to see our creative efforts!
Year 4 have had a tasty week. They really enjoyed designing and making their own pizzas in Design & Technology - I am told they tasted delicious; however, they were polished off before this could be verified! We are very lucky to have wonderful DT facilities in school and it is great to see the children's cooking skills develop during their time here at Throckley.
Year 5 visited the Quayside this week as part of the #Inspiredby art project. They have learned lots from local artist John Quinn, who has spent time in school with the children. They have enjoyed the freedom of expression the project has promoted and have shown lots of creativity! Look out for their artwork on Twitter!
Reading is so important to us at Throckley Primary and, this week, it has been wonderful to hear from children how much they are enjoying their class text. Year 5 are reading 'Treason' by Berlie Doherty and are enthralled during whole class reading sessions. Meanwhile, in Year 1, children are exploring texts by Julia Donaldson - which one is your child's favourite? Please do ask your child about what they are reading in school and don't forget to share with us in reading records what they like to read at home - we love to hear about this and it's wonderful when children recommend books to their peers.
If you don't already, then please follow us on Twitter so you can find out what your child has been involved in. Twitter is easy to access from the Homepage of our website or from this link: https://twitter.com/throckleyprim
Weekly Tip from the Sustainability Team
Please put all of your rubbish in a suitable bin (remember to recycle what you can!). Littering is ugly and dangerous to wildlife. If you see litter and can pick it up safely (we use litter-picking tools here in school), please help keep Throckley litter-free!
Yours faithfully,
Julie Stuart

OUTER WEST LEARNING TRUST JOINT CONSULTATION LETTER
(To read this letter in another language, please click on the Translate button, top right)
Monday 3rd October 2022
Dear Stakeholders,
Consultation on a proposal for the Outer West Learning Trust to establish a new Multi-Academy Trust and convert to academy status
Background
You may be aware that there is a significant ambition from Government to have all schools across the UK join academy trusts by 2030. As a group of nine schools in the Outer West Learning (OWL) Trust, we are eager to shape our own future. We therefore feel it is important that we approach any academisation agenda proactively. As a result of this, our Head Teachers have spent a considerable amount of time exploring the options for our schools.
The nine primary schools of the OWL Trust have worked together closely for over nine years. This collaborative relationship has helped to support school standards and develop protocols; helped staff learn from one another; and allowed our pupils to participate in shared learning events.
The Governing Bodies share the drive for their schools to continue to provide an excellent education for their pupils, while protecting each school’s role at the heart of its community. This includes working to strengthen our partnership to provide mutual support, challenge and benefits for each other, which has led to provisional discussions around the potential of forming a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). We believe that there may be potential for a closer working relationship with like-minded partner schools, which could result in all parties involved being able to provide the best possible educational experience in which all pupils can thrive now, and in future.
A formal partnership (MAT) would be built on the values of our existing set up. All of our schools are currently graded as Good or Outstanding according to Ofsted. Because our schools are already successful in their own right, under the proposal they would retain many of their unique qualities and strengths. Being part of an OWL MAT would result in the opportunity to work within a new governance structure with the aim of further improving outcomes for all the children in the Outer West. The schools will continue to share best practice, further develop and enhance the curriculum, and make financial savings, as well as being able to support and challenge each other in a much more meaningful way.
Proposal
Each Governing Body has been considering the future plans of its school in an ever-changing and increasingly challenging educational landscape.
The Governing Bodies agree that they should explore the possibility of converting to a new local Multi-Academy Trust and all that would entail and consult on conversion to academy status. The proposed MAT would have nine founding member schools, listed in alphabetical order below:
Knop Law Primary School
Lemington Riverside Primary School
Milecastle Primary School
Newburn Manor Primary School
Simonside Primary School
Throckley Primary School
Waverley Primary School
West Denton Primary School
Westerhope Primary School
One of the reasons we would like to explore this option is that pupils and staff may benefit from the greater opportunities that a formal MAT partnership would bring, which would include:
increased collaboration as a natural extension of our successful Outer West Learning Foundation Trust
better support for schools to raise standards
extended learning opportunities and activities for pupils
enhanced support for the pastoral and development needs of our pupils
an enriched curriculum through partnership working and shared resources
sharing of excellent practice in teaching and learning
enhanced professional development of teaching and support staff
the ability to attract and retain the best staff
securing cost and resource efficiencies through joint commissioning of services
being in a strong position to respond to changes in the local and national educational landscapes.
Consultation
We are now consulting with all stakeholders to invite your views on the matter, which will feed into discussions and determine whether our school should proceed with conversion.
At the end of the consultation, the Governing Body will consider the responses before any decisions are made. The consultation period will run between Monday 3rd October and Monday 7th November 2022.
If the Governing Bodies agree to proceed, the plan would be for the schools to apply to establish a Multi-Academy Trust and for the schools to convert in January 2024.
We have attached Frequently Asked Questions (an FAQ) for your information.
If you have any feedback on the proposal that you would like to share with the Governing Bodies, please complete the attached survey form and return to the school, or follow the link to the online survey, by Monday 7th November 2022.
The FAQ will be updated and shared on our schools’ websites to reflect any questions that are pertinent to our local community. Whilst we do not anticipate responding to each and every communication, we will provide answers to questions via the FAQ and we welcome your views.
Please be assured that your views will be taken into consideration by our Governing Bodies when they meet in November to consider how to proceed.
We hope the information provided offers clarity about the proposal and the reasons for forming a MAT. We look forward to hearing your views.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the proposal?
The proposal is for the nine local primary schools of the Outer West Learning Trust to form a partnership called a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), and for the schools to convert to academy status.
The nine schools have been working closely together for some time and have already benefitted from such collaboration and partnership.
How would forming a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) benefit our school?
We believe that stronger partnership between schools that share a similar vision, ethos and values, and the same commitment to raising standards, would help our school in a number of important ways, which would include:
securing cost and resource efficiencies
increased collaboration as a natural extension of our successful Outer West Learning Foundation Trust
better support for schools to raise standards
extended learning opportunities and activities for pupils
enhanced support for the pastoral and development needs of our pupils
sharing of excellent practice in teaching and learning
an enriched curriculum through evidence-informed practice
enhanced professional development of teaching and support staff
the ability to attract and retain the best staff
being in a strong position to respond to changes in the local and national educational landscapes.
We believe that we can bring enhanced benefits and opportunities to parents and pupils by formalising these existing working relationships.
Why is this being considered?
Being an academy and joining a MAT with the Outer West Learning Trust could potentially provide greater opportunities for working more closely together in the secure knowledge that we have a common purpose and ethos.
What is an academy?
An academy is a state school that is run by an academy trust. The academy trust enters into an agreement with the Secretary of State for Education that sets out its responsibilities and accountabilities for the effective running of the academy. The academy is funded directly by the Government - not through the Local Authority. The trust is given charitable exemption, which means it must operate much like a charity.
What is a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT)?
A Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) is when two or more academies come together in partnership. In our case, we are looking to form a primary Multi-Academy Trust of the nine schools currently in the Outer West Learning Trust. Each member school would keep its own name.
What are the advantages of conversion?
The Government is clear that the greater freedoms enjoyed by academies are designed to allow schools to develop and build on individual strengths in response to the needs of the community. We are investigating whether the additional freedoms, flexibilities, and support provided through a Multi-Academy Trust would enable the Governors to better secure the long-term future of our schools. We would be able to pool resources, allowing us to improve teaching and management practices further. We would also achieve a greater degree of control of our finances, helping us to safeguard these funds for the benefit of our children.
What are the disadvantages of conversion?
Greater freedoms do bring additional responsibilities including statutory duties as a Multi-Academy Trust, but our schools are confident we can manage these. Academy conversion is not a panacea for all ills and we are aware of some difference in opinion as to the effectiveness of Multi-Academy Trusts. We would encourage you to consider the arguments for and against, and check the accuracy of assertions that are being made.
What are the risks of becoming an academy?
The change to academy status takes a school out of Local Authority control but does not exclude the school from Local Authority support. Local Authority support is provided equitably to maintained schools and academies where a statutory duty applies. Other services are available on a traded basis for both maintained schools and academies to opt in as they wish. At some stage in the future, any school might be influenced to become part of a broader academy chain. We believe that the ability to form a local MAT, under local direction, offers the best opportunity to sustain vibrant, successful local schools, and the best outcomes for children.
What is involved in becoming a Multi-Academy Trust?
Our schools will complete a consultation with parents, pupils, staff and the wider community which the Governors will take into account in reaching their decision. If, following the consultation, the Governing Bodies of all schools agree this proposal in principle, and Governors decide to proceed, it will be the Department for Education who decides whether or not to approve our application.
Who makes the final decision to join a Multi-Academy Trust?
The Governing Bodies will consult with all stakeholders in order to make an informed decision on whether or not to join the MAT. After collecting evidence, the final decision will be made by each individual Governing Body.
How will the MAT and the schools be run?
The MAT would have a Trustee Board consisting of nine Directors made up of people with particular skills and expertise to help it run efficiently, effectively, and compliantly. Although the Board would have a number of legal and regulatory powers, it can delegate many of its powers to Local Governing Bodies and Committees. Local Governing Bodies would continue to have a mixture of representatives from parents, staff, and local communities.
Each Head Teacher would still be responsible for running their own school. Together the nine Head Teachers would then form a leadership group to develop plans for partnership and collaboration.
Will any changes to the school be made as a result of conversion?
There would be additional governance accountability within a MAT to bring closer working practices between Trust members, through school improvement planning. The MAT would have an overarching Board of Trustees responsible for the running of academies that would then delegate responsibilities to each individual school’s Local Governing Board.
It is our intention at this stage that the character, ethos, and values of the schools would remain unchanged should academy conversion take place.
Would the school have to change its name, uniform, or logo?
No, none of the schools would be changing their name, uniform or logo as part of a MAT conversion. However the MAT would have its own additional logo included on all school correspondence.
How will being a Multi-Academy Trust affect staff?
Currently, each of the schools in the Outer West Learning Trust employ their own staff. After conversion, all staff will be employed by the new Trust Board. Staff are legally protected to transfer under the same employment terms and conditions, including pensions. Staff will be provided further information on how they are affected. Being part of the MAT will also provide greater opportunities for career progression and development. Already, staff are working together on a range of teaching, learning, curriculum, and pupil support projects.
How are the children affected?
If the schools convert to academy status and establish the MAT, the children won’t notice any immediate difference. Each school would continue to strive towards an outstanding education for all our children. As a result of potential new training opportunities given to teachers, the intention of these opportunities would be to further improve the children’s education and raise standards. They would also have wider opportunities to collaborate with other children in the Outer West.
How are parents/carers affected?
Parents will not be affected however they may start to see and hear more information about the MAT. Parents may notice that correspondence sent by the academy, e.g. letters and emails, would include the MAT’s logo.
How much does conversion cost?
Costs depend on which law firm the academy chooses to use, and can vary from school to school. Once schools are granted permission to convert by receiving their academy order, each school in the group will be eligible for a grant of £25,000 from the Department for Education towards the conversion costs.
Will we get more money as an academy?
Academies receive the same amount of per-pupil funding as they would receive from the Local Authority as a maintained school. The whole of the school budget would come direct to the school from central Government, allowing the school to control the whole of their spending. As part of a Multi-Academy Trust, we may also achieve greater efficiencies through increased buying power and joint commissioning of services.
What happens with money raised by parents for an individual school?
The money that is raised by parents, members of the community, and the school’s PTFA for an individual school will be retained by that school.
How will admissions to the school be affected?
The application process for parents and carers would remain the same. The MAT would become the admitting authority for the nine schools but each would have its own admissions policy going forward. Any future policy changes would need to be clear and fair, in line with the admissions law and the School Admissions Code. The Local Authority will continue to have responsibility for making sure there are sufficient school places locally and coordinating the admissions process for all schools.
Will our responsibilities in relation to SEND and exclusions change?
No, responsibilities as an academy in relation to Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) and exclusions would be just the same as they are now.
Can a child with an Education, Health and Care Plan nominate an academy as their school of choice?
Yes, schools converting to academy status can retain the admissions criteria they currently use. These arrangements and related processes must at all times comply with the School Admissions Code.
Will academies be free from the Ofsted inspection regime?
No, academies are inspected in the same way as maintained schools. Each school will continue to be inspected individually. The performance of all schools would continue to be monitored and if there are signs of deterioration, or other factors likely to cause concern, these could trigger an inspection.
Does the Multi-Academy Trust have charity status?
Yes, the MAT has charity status – the directors of the academy trust are the charity trustees. Academies in MATs are ‘exempt’ charities – this means they are not required to formally register with the Charity Commission, but the academies have the same charitable status as the organisations that are fully registered charities.
Does becoming an academy change the relationship with other schools and the community?
No, academies must ensure that they continue to be at the heart of their community, collaborating and sharing facilities and expertise with other schools and the wider community.
Can schools withdraw from the conversion process?
Schools are able to withdraw right up until the point that they sign the funding agreement. Once this is signed, there is a legally binding agreement between the Secretary of State and the academy, and the termination would require a long notice period (seven years).
Will parents/carers be able to share their views?
Yes, the school will hold a full consultation which all parents/carers, governors, and staff members will be invited to take part in.
How do I take part in the consultation process?
At this stage, we are not committing the schools to conversion to academy status. We are consulting with everyone associated with our schools before Governors meet again to make a final decision.
We encourage you to respond to via the survey below, or online via the school’s website, to make comments and share your views by Monday 7th November 2022.

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you will enjoy this week's blog. You will notice from the Curriculum Spotlight how many exciting learning experiences have taken place this week.
We have received an award for being a Carer Friendly School!
The Carer Friendly School Accreditation is an award (accredited by Newcastle Carers) to recognise and celebrate the positive steps schools in Newcastle are taking to support young carers.
1 in 12 young people has caring responsibilities. Young carers take on physical, emotional or practical responsibilities at home because someone in their family is ill, has a disability, experiences mental health problems, or has an addiction. Young people want to help and feel proud that they can offer support, but for many young carers having extra responsibilities can be difficult and impact their life at home and school. We are very proud to have our work with young carers recognised in this way.

- If your child already eats a school meal on a Thursday, you do not need to do anything as your child will automatically have the tasting menu.
- If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, you do not need to do anything. All children in these year groups will be able to taste the menu items – even if they have a packed lunch.
- If your child is in Nursery or Year 3 – Year 6 and eats a packed lunch, you will need to tell us if they would like to try the taster menu (£2.10 for Nursery, £2.20 for Y3-Y6 or free if you qualify for Free School Meals). Please respond to the text that we will send you on Monday and let us know if your child would like to try the menu.
Phonics Update
Children who are learning phonics in school have a robust daily programme which ensures that children are confident, able readers. Research shows us that traditional ‘tests’ can often have a limited impact on learning. We will therefore no longer send spelling ‘lists’ for those children in KS1/2 who are learning phonics. Children practise their sounds and spellings every day in school and apply their knowledge through their English lessons. Teachers are skilled in assessment and have a clear understanding of children’s progress so will no longer ‘test’ children each Friday. Instead, teachers will share with you in reading records the sounds that your child has learned that week, and suggest some words for you to practise with your child, that include those sounds. Support from home is invaluable while children are learning to read, so please spend 5 minutes each day with your child practising the recognition of each phoneme (sound) and spelling words containing the grapheme (letter). Thank you.
Nouvelles excitantes! (Exciting news!)
We are pleased to announce that we have made links with a Year 4 class at the Ecole Pierre et Marie Curie in Nancy-Metz, which is in northern France. Year 4 children in school will be writing letters to pupils from Ecole Pierre (in French!) and will receive replies in due course. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to apply their learning; they have thoroughly enjoyed developing their speaking and listening skills during French lessons with Monsieur Reid-Milligan and are gaining lots of confidence in writing simple sentences in French. Tres bien, Year 4!
Curriculum Spotlight
What an amazing week we’ve had here in school! We work hard to ensure that children have relevant and meaningful experiences in school – this really helps to give context to children’s learning and also helps in developing vocabulary.
Please see below for some highlights from the last week. Research shows that repeating what we’ve learned and talking about it has a huge impact on how much we remember. With this in mind, we’ve added a question for you to ask your child which links to what they’ve been learning in school. We’ve also included some key words which they could use when answering the question. Happy sharing!
Acorns have been learning about farm animals!
- Can you name a farm animal? What noise does the animal make?
(key words to use as prompts: cow, sheep, pig)
Nursery have been learning about European Day of Languages!
- Can you say hello in another language?
(key words to use as prompts: bonjour, hola, ciao)
Reception have been learning all about 'What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday!' The story is set in London.
- Can you remember any of the London landmarks that the Ladybird saw? Can you remember which city you live in?
(key words to use as prompts: city, capital, landmark)
Year 1 have been learning about the weather and getting ready to write their own weather report!
- Can you describe the weather outside?
(key words to use as prompts: cloudy, partly cloudy, windy, sunny, raining)
Year 2 have been learning about our wonderful coastline!
- What would we see if we visited the coast?
(key words to use as prompts: lighthouse, beach, promenade, pier)
Year 3 have been learning about the rainforest.
- What is deforestation? How and why does it happen?
(key words to use as prompts: logging, burning, farming)
Year 4 have been learning about still life drawings as part of their art lessons.
- Can you create a contour drawing of still life?
(key words to use as prompts: contour, composition, cross-hatch)
Year 5 have been learning about Jane Goodall who was an animal behaviourist who studied chimpanzees!
- What is an animal behaviourist? What did Jane Goodall find out about the behaviour of chimpanzees?
(Key words to use as prompts: omnivores, herbivores, socialise, intelligence)
Year 6 have been learning about evacuation in World War Two.
- What was evacuation? Who was evacuated during WW2 and why was this necessary?
(key words to use as prompts: air raids, urban (cities), rural (countryside) and safety).

Dear Parents and Carers
It's been another busy week here in school and we certainly haven't allowed the rain to dampen our spirits.
Sustainability Club
On Thursday, our Sustainability Club met for the first time. Our Eco-Warriors are from year groups throughout the school and all of them were extremely enthusiastic and gathered wonderful ideas about how we can make our school community more environmentally friendly. We’re beyond excited to give our amazing children a voice on such important issues and they can’t wait to give us all innovative tips on how to save our planet!
Sustainability tip: Don’t forget to switch off the light when you leave a room; saving energy is brilliant for the planet and helps us all save money at home and at school!

Dear Parents and Carers
We have had another great week here at Throckley Primary. All the pupils and staff are settling into their new classes and there is a fantastic 'buzz' of learning across the school.
Open Day for Children Starting Reception in September 2023
We would like to invite families who are interested in joining our school to a personal tour led by our Early Years Leader. These visits will take place on our open day on Wednesday 12th October 2022. We feel that an individual visit will give you the best opportunity to learn about our offer and to decide if Throckley Primary is the right school for you and your child. If you would like to book a tour, please use the 'Book A Visit' button or the 'Email Us' button on the Homepage of the website and let us know if you prefer a morning or an afternoon appointment. You can also ring our Office Team on 0191 267 5311. If you are unable to attend our Open Day, please contact us to arrange a visit on another day.
Coffee Mornings
We will be holding Coffee Mornings in school each term, starting with our first one on Wednesday 19th October 9 - 10.30am. This will be a great opportunity to meet other parents/carers and enjoy a hot drink and a biscuit (or two!). We would love to see you there.
Heads of Houses Election
As you are aware from my last blog, every child in school is part of a House team (Hopewell, Whin, Chance or Fortune) where all of their achievement points are totalled up and we have weekly House winners and termly prizes for those with the most points. Each year we elect four Heads of Houses from Year 6 to represent the team, being the named 'voice' for leadership of the House. Heads of Houses work alongside School Council representatives to help lead change within the school. We also elect a Head Librarian in Year 6 to run the library club and support the children to develop their love of reading.
Year 6 candidates have been working so hard on their speeches and, in assembly today, they were so brave in standing up in front of the whole school to deliver their speech in the hope to secure votes from all of the pupils. As well as developing their leadership skills, these elections are a great way for the children to learn about Democracy (which is one of the British Values we teach in school) as they get first-hand experience of having a vote and a say in things that matter to them.
I am pleased to announce that, after totalling all of the votes from all of the children, the chosen candidates are as follows:
Heads of Houses:
Jamie Thompson
Lizbella Galome
Gracie Allsopp
Darragh Dixon
Head Librarians:
Ava Bennett
Charlie Wilkinson
I would like to congratulate all of these pupils, as well as those candidates who weren't successful this time, on their inspiring speeches and their brave delivery in assembly. Many of the staff were moved to tears!
Our School Council representatives will be elected and announced next week.
Curriculum Spotlight
If your child is anything like my boys when they were younger, they aren't often the most forthcoming in telling us about their day in school. Each week I will be drawing your attention to some 'Curriculum Spotlights'. These are tweets which showcase the amazing work of the children across school and the exciting events they participate in. We hope that these will be great conversation starters for you to discuss learning with your child or even just as chance for you to see what they get up to!
If you don't already, then please follow us on Twitter so you can find out what your child has been involved in. Twitter is easy to access from the Homepage of our website or from this link: https://twitter.com/throckleyprim
Here are a few highlights from this week:
- Year 2 Music Lesson
Year 3 Zones of Regulation
Year 3 Science
Year 4 British Values - Democracy
Year 6 French
KS2 Local History Assembly with Mr Outterside
Charlton Street Community Hub
A new children and families community hub is coming to the area and will be based on the site of Lemington Riverside Primary. I have attached the flyer if you would like to contact them to find out more about the opportunities and support they can offer.I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see everyone back in school on Tuesday 19th September, following the funeral of Her Majesty the Queen.

Dear Parent/Carer
Your child’s annual flu vaccination is now due
This vaccination programme is in place to help protect your child against flu, which can be an unpleasant illness and sometimes causes serious complications. This year, with COVID-19 in circulation, it’s more important than ever that eligible groups are vaccinated to protect them from flu. The free flu vaccine will help prevent them getting the flu and is the best protection from the flu virus. Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable friends and family by preventing the spread of flu.
The intra-nasal flu vaccine is the most effective protection for your child against flu. However, if in the past you have refused the intra-nasal vaccine due to PORCINE GELATINE content, we are now able to offer an alternative injectable flu vaccine which is porcine-free. Please complete the consent form stating that you would like your child to have the IM flu vaccine. This can be given in school, but if you would prefer to be with your child, please contact the immunisation team on …07900138284…… and we will direct you to the link to book a clinic
The online consent can be accessed via any online device. Please click on the following link https://www.northumbriaimmunisations.co.uk/Forms/Flu which will direct you to an online consent form for you to complete.
We will be visiting your child’s school on Thursday 10th November 2022 please complete the consent form in full using the following school code: NB108446. If a consent form is not completed by midday the 48 hours before our visit your child may not receive their immunisation at school.
Please note only those children in Reception to year 6 in mainstream schools and reception to year 13 in special schools are currently eligible to receive the nasal flu vaccine.
The vaccination is free and recommended for children and young people. It will be given by a quick and simple spray up the nose. Here is a link to a leaflet explaining the vaccination programme which includes details about the small number of children for whom the nasal vaccine is not appropriate:
In the rare event that you do not have access to the internet, please contact the immunisation team who will complete a consent form with you over the phone.
If you require further information regarding the vaccines we offer please go to our Immunisation website which has full details of our service: https://www.northumbria.nhs.uk/our-services/childrens-services/immunisations
If you have any queries regarding the online consent form or the Flu vaccine please contact the Northumbria healthcare School Aged Immunisation Team on07900138284…………..
Yours sincerely,
Northumbria Healthcare School Aged Immunisation Team
If your child becomes wheezy or has their asthma medication increased after you have completed the on-line form, please contact the immunisation team on …07900138284………... If you decide you do not want to vaccinate your child against flu, please complete the consent form giving the reason. This will help us plan and improve the service. For further information see: www.nhs.uk/child-flu
Head Teacher Blog, 9th Sept 2022
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back everyone and I hope you all had a lovely summer.
In order to remember the life and service of The Queen, the children and staff took a moment of reflection this morning in assembly. May she rest in peace.
Head Teacher Blog
Welcome to my new, weekly Head Teacher blog where I will be keeping you up to date with all the latest news and information. The format of the blog is a work in progress as we are looking at how best to share it. We will continue with the weekly emails for now, but please look out for the new format which is coming soon.
The Throckley Vision
Our vision here at Throckley Primary School is to provide a purposeful and empowering curriculum that fully prepares learners for the next steps in their school careers and opens the doors to the wider world. In my weekly blog, I aim to share with you many of the exciting events that happen here in school for us to achieve our vision, and to keep you up to date with important information and diary dates so that you can know how to further support your child here in school. If you would like to know more about our school Vision which includes our Values, our Promise, our Curriculum Drivers and Our Wonderful Learner (OWLs) then please follow this link: Link to our Curriculum Page.
At Throckley we pride ourselves on the outstanding behaviour and conduct in and out of school. We are very proud of all of our pupils and the young adults that they become. We have developed our Home School Agreement to ensure that staff, pupils, parents and carers understand our expectations and enable us to work together to create our wonderful learning environment. We will be sending out an updated version of our Home School Agreement next week.
First Week Back
This week has been a fantastic start to the new academic year. We welcomed the children back into school on Tuesday and we were so impressed with how they settled into their new classes and how they were all dressed to impress with their smart uniforms.
During the first week back, staff spend much of the week introducing the children to the new rules and routines for in-class and transitioning around the school at break and lunch times. Staff have been overwhelmed with how well the children have responded and how diligently they have worked. What a credit they are to you and what fantastic role models they are for Throckley Primary! I can imagine that there have been lots of Achievement Stars given out this week.
Every Friday I lead an Achievement Assembly where all the star points are counted, and we celebrate the winning House (Hopewell, Fortune, Chance or Whin). Please ask your child which House they are in and how well they are doing. In the assembly, we also give a certificate to the classes with the highest weekly attendance and the class mascot is brought to the front to collect this for display. Each week the class teachers also choose a child for a Golden Award certificate and a prize from my prize shop for upholding one of our Throckley Values: Learning, Caring, Respect, Teamwork, Success and Pride. This half term we will focus on Learning.
Seesaw
Seesaw is a great platform for us to share home-school communications. Children will use this for homework and Class Teachers will post messages home. There is a facility for you to message the Class Teacher too.
Next week, be sure to check Seesaw where you will find a curriculum map for your child's year group. This document outlines what your child will be learning this half term. This is useful for you to refer to as it would be wonderful for you to discuss learning with your child and ask them questions about their new knowledge.
You will also find the 'Welcome to your new class' presentation which will give you lots of information about your child's new class, what to do if you need to contact or speak to staff in school, PE days, homework, spellings and times table information, as well as important dates and things to remember.
Who's Who?
We have new staff and existing staff in new roles here in school and our 'Who's Who?' section of the website is really useful should you want to check who to contact if any matters arise. As teachers are getting their classes in from the yard in the mornings and setting up for the day, please ring the office and leave a message should you want a member of staff to get back to you regarding any issues or concerns you may have. We endeavour to contact parents that same day in order to resolve any urgent matters.
I am in school most days, however I also work as strategic lead for the wider Outer West Learning Trust and support Newcastle Local Authority as part of their School Effectiveness Team. If any parent wishes to speak to me and I am not available that day, then our two Deputy Head Teachers (Mrs Giblin and Mrs Brown) will be on hand to respond, or you can make an appointment to come and see me.
Extra-curricular Activities
An information letter about our extra-curricular clubs for this half term is being sent out today by email to the parents of children in Years 1 -6 .
School Office
The school office is extremely busy and therefore we would like to remind parents that we ask you to telephone or email to leave any messages rather than coming to the office window, where possible.
End of the day procedures
Please note below a reminder of end-of-day timings:
Nursery: 3.00pm
Reception: 3.10pm
Years 1-6: 3.15pm
The end of the day is a busy time and in order to get all children out of school and safely with their designated adult, please ensure that, whilst waiting, you stand back and clear of the exit doors. This makes it much easier for staff to see the parents for a quicker, smoother and safer exit.

Message from Mrs Stuart
As we come to the end of another academic year, it is a time to reflect on how proud we are of all of the children here at Throckley Primary School and how hard they have worked. This achievement is evidenced by our tremendous Phonics, Times Table check, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two statutory test results. Well done!

The report states that our virtual verification visit ‘illustrated the plethora of excellent SMSC practice that is embedded throughout everyday school life.’ Thank you to Mr Outterside who has been leading on this project in 2021-22 and we look forward to continuing to develop SMSC at Throckley Primary throughout the next academic year.

Keeping Children Safe in the Heat
The Met Office has issued heat warnings and it is predicted that temperatures in the Newcastle area will reach 28°C - 30°C early next week. We will be following the government guidance about looking after children during heatwaves, including the use of ventilation, keeping children hydrated, avoiding vigorous physical activity, encouraging children to wear loose, light coloured clothing and sunhats with wide brims, to use sunscreen, and providing them with plenty of water. Please ensure that your child has sunscreen on before they arrive at school and that they have a sunhat and bottle of water with them in school every day.

Year 6 SATs Results
This week, all Year 6 children nationally have received their SATs results. We couldn't be prouder of our Year 6 pupils - they achieved a wonderful set of results which are testament to their hard work and dedication both this year, and throughout their time here at Throckley Primary School. I am delighted to say that the percentage of children in our school who met the national standard in reading; writing; grammar, punctuation and spelling; and mathematics, is once again well above the national average. All children in Year 6 have made fantastic progress throughout their time at Throckley Primary School and will no doubt go on to great things during their time in secondary school and beyond. This is an amazing set of results after what has been a very difficult couple of years. This is the first set of statutory assessments schools have taken since 2019 and we are beyond proud of the Year 6 children and the teaching team, who have all worked incredibly hard this year. Well done, everyone!

Important Reminder from Mrs Stuart regarding school uniform
As we are heading towards the end of term, I understand that parents will not be wanting to purchase new uniform or footwear, but it is essential that we maintain our uniform expectations across school, and we can support families with this as much as is necessary. I am seeing a lot of trainers and leggings creeping in and these are not agreed uniform. if your child does not have black shoes or skirt/trousers as per our policy then we have lots of spare, clean uniform and sandshoes that we will be asking them to change into so that we can maintain our high expectations of dress code across school.
We have our Sports Day next Wednesday and therefore the children will need their school PE T-shirt and a plain pair of black or navy-blue shorts/jogging bottoms. Trainers can be worn for PE and on this day.
Over the summer, it is essential to consider the school uniform policy before purchasing items for your child for the start of school in September. Next week we will be sending out our policy and guides to all parents so that the children are well prepared for next academic year.
Update Your Contact Details
We are sending out a Survey link today so that you can update the contact details that we have for your child. Please complete the first three questions of the survey even if none of the contact details have changed. This will enable us to track your response and save you from receiving reminders to complete the survey.

Healthy School Success
We are proud to announce that Throckley Primary has passed through the Healthy Schools quality assurance programme and that we have retained Newcastle Healthy School Status. The audit team picked out the following highlights in the school’s report:
- Throckley Primary has in place an embedded whole school health promoting approach and ethos, which is inclusive of the whole school community. The school is committed to continuous improvement.
- The PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is well-planned, developed, coordinated, monitored and assessed. The use of local data to produce a bespoke curriculum to best meet needs is excellent practice.
- The Outer West Trust PSHE meetings provide a supportive network, which enables schools to learn from one another to help continuously improve PSHE and to provide a consistency of approach across the locality.
- A whole school approach is taken to address mental health and emotional wellbeing of pupils.
- Pupil voice is a further strength, and sits at the heart of the school. Pupils have their voice heard through a range of methods and Throckley Primary’s school council is clearly impacting change.
- Physical activity provision is thriving and a further strength, with a wide range of opportunities provided for pupils to increase their activity levels throughout the whole school day. The school is fortunate to have extensive grounds to support physical activity, and these are being utilised effectively. Throckley Primary is to be congratulated on its achievement of the Silver School Games Mark, which further indicates your strengths in this area.
- Your work to tackle air pollution and particularly air quality is welcomed, with the no idling policy and ‘closed gates’ policy at school drop off and pick up times.

Punctuality Reminders
It is your responsibility to make sure your child arrives to school on time. Please help them to be punctual and learn this important life skill. The gates onto the yards close at 8.55am, so they need to be on site and ready to enter the building before that time. Once the gates have closed, your child will need to enter school via the front office and you will need to sign them into our Inventry system as arriving late. The system will ask you to provide a reason for being late.
When a child arrives late to school, they miss vital instruction at the start of the day and are unprepared for the lesson ahead or for key events in school. Being on time every day helps to build the habit of being punctual and will play an important role in their future success.
If your child arrives to school late on a regular basis, we will contact you and your child could be placed on an internal monitoring period, to support them to improve their punctuality. Please also note that, if you child arrives to school after the registers have closed (at 9.15am), it is recorded as a session of unauthorised absence. If your child has 10 sessions of unauthorised absence over a 10 week period, they will be referred to the local authority for legal monitoring, and this can lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued. Full details of our attendance policy, including our expectations around punctuality, can be found on our website.
Definition of Regular Attendance from the Department for Education, ‘Working together to improve school attendance’: Where parents decide to have their child registered at school, they have an additional legal duty to ensure their child attends that school regularly. This means their child must attend every day that the school is open, except in a small number of allowable circumstances such as being too ill to attend or being given permission for an absence in advance from the school.

Class Attendance Prizes for the Half Term
Good attendance is just one of the many things we celebrate each week in our achievement assembly. Next week we will be announcing which classes have had the best attendance for the half term. There will be an Early Years/Key Stage 1 winner and a Key Stage 2 winner. Rather than us telling the winners what their reward will be, we are going to let them tell us!
Both winning classes will come up with their own ideas of what they would like their reward to be (for example movie, extra play time, or a sweet treat) and then there will be a class vote to decide. We are looking forward to seeing which classes have the best attendance for this half term and how they are going to celebrate their victory! Good luck everyone!

Please Complete our Survey about End of Year Celebrations
Following two summers of Covid disruptions, we are busy planning how to best celebrate the end of this academic year with each class. We are considering two options and would like to find out which of these options are preferred by most parents:
- Short (15 minute) assemblies for parents to attend for each of their children during the school day. The Year 6 Leavers Assembly is already planned and will not be affected by this survey. If your child is in Year 6, you do not need to complete a survey.
- Short class videos which are published on the website
Please use this link to complete the short survey to let us know which option you prefer.

Year 6 SATs
What a week it has been for Year 6! All of their hard work over the year (and since nursery!) has led to this week when they get to show how much progress they have made by completing their SATs in reading, grammar, spelling and maths (arithmetic & reasoning). Mrs Stuart, Mrs Giblin, Mrs Brown, Miss Dockey, Miss Taylor, Mrs Longstaff and the whole staff team are so proud of their hard work and commitment throughout this school year. They are a credit to our school and deserve every success in the future. SATs are a small part of their life here at Throckley and only show their abilities in two core subjects. We continue to be proud of what they demonstrate every day across the curriculum, and of the way they support and care for their peers and friends. Thank you to Y6 parents for all of your support!

Covid Update
- From 1 April, routine testing will no longer be expected in all education and children’s social care settings. Free Covid testing has now ended for the general public.
- From 1 April, children with a positive COVID-19 test result will be advised to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for three days. For adults over 18 this advice is five days.
- Most people will no longer be testing for Covid when they feel unwell. Therefore, the government is advising people with symptoms of a respiratory infection, including COVID-19, and a high temperature or who feel unwell, to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and they no longer have a high temperature.
- The school will continue with the following baseline infection prevention and control measures to manage the spread of all illnesses:
- Ensuring occupied spaces are well-ventilated and let fresh air in.
- Reinforcing good hygiene practices such as hand washing and cleaning.
- Sending home children who are unwell.
Regular Attendance = Success
Starting next week, at the end of each half-term, every parent will receive an email telling them what their child's attendance percentage is so far for the year, what attendance 'zone' they are in and a short message telling them what this means for their child.
We know that there are sometimes reasons why children are not able to attend school, however, in order for children to reach their full potential, it is important that they attend school regularly. Knowing what your child's attendance percentage is (and what 'zone' they are in) will help you keep track of this.
The attendance zones are as follows:
- Gold - Excellent - 99% and above
- Green - Good - 97% - 98.9%
- Amber - Warning - 92% - 96.9%
- Red - Improvement Required - less than 92%
In addition, any child with less than 90% attendance is classed as a 'persistent absentee'.
All children should aim to have at least 97% 'green zone' attendance. Falling into the red zone is likely to trigger further action by the school, including internal monitoring, and if not improved, could result in a referral to the local authority, where a Fixed Penalty Notice could be issued for poor attendance.
You can access our full Attendance Policy on our website: https://www.throckleyprim.newcastle.sch.uk/policies/
Please remember that if you are concerned about your child's attendance and would like support, please speak to a member of staff. We hope to see lots of gold and green zone attendance emails being issued next Friday!
We would like to say a huge well done to all of our classes who achieved 'green zone' attendance, over 97% this week:
Year 5 Blue - Special congratulations to Miss Underwood’s class who have 100% attendance this week.
End of Term Activities
- The children will be attending a special Religious Education assembly next week with Mr Outterside as part of the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral Social and Cultural) curriculum project. They will be learning about Easter and Ramadan which are religious observances in our community that take place at this time of year.
- Each teacher is planning fund end of term activities for their classes next week.
- The PTFA will be drawing their raffle and holding a small bake sale in the yard on the last day of term (please see the attached flyers).

Term Time Holiday Reminder
Can we please remind parents and carers that holidays taken during term-time are not authorised by school, unless a request has been put in writing to the chair of governors to consider exceptional circumstances.
There has been a huge amount of disruption for children following the pandemic and we know it has been tough on parents too. However, we must stress that for our children, they need the routine of attending school regularly. This helps them not only with their learning but also with their confidence in school and with their social and emotional wellbeing.
We always try to help with the cost of holidays by adding staff training days to school holidays, in the hope that a little flexibility with dates may make a break a bit cheaper for you. This year is no exception and we have chosen our Jubilee holiday for Monday 6th June 2022, straight after the May half-term, as we know this is a popular time for travel.
If you have already booked something which means your child will miss school, please request a Holiday Form from the office. This is required in order to update the registers with holiday dates and correct reasons for absence. It is really important that we have the correct reasons for your child’s absence, so we know they are safe when they are not in school.
Please note that if your child is of compulsory school age and misses 10 half-day sessions (a total of 5 full days) over a 10-week period due to holiday absence, you will be referred to the local authority and a Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued (this is £60 per pupil per parent). Your child’s attendance will also be internally monitored following their absence. You can look at our Attendance Policy in full on our website www.throckleyprim.newcastle.sch.uk
Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Regular Attendance = Success
We know that a lot of our children have been absent due to Covid and even though the number of confirmed cases is dropping in the community, there will be more unavoidable absences. However, there are other things that can be done to ensure that any further disruption to your child’s learning is minimal. In order to help your child get the best out of their time at school, we want to remind you of some of the recommendations in our Attendance Policy which will help your child to build up the habits of good school attendance and punctuality:
- Make sure your child arrives to school on time
- Make appointments for the doctor, dentist or optician after school hours or during school holidays
- Avoid taking family holidays during term time
- Don’t let your child stay off for a minor ailment
- Don’t let your child stay off for reasons like going shopping, birthdays, getting haircuts and looking after younger siblings
- If your child is poorly first thing in the morning but improves by lunchtime, you can send them to school for the afternoon session
- If your child recovers from illness before the end of the week, send them back to school, even if it is just for one day – every day counts!
We are going to start sharing our attendance successes with you every week. This week we would like to say a huge well done to all of our classes who achieved 'green zone' attendance, over 97%:
- Acorns (Mrs Traill)
- Nursery Blue (Mrs Sample and Miss Reilly)
- Year 2 Blue (Mrs Stout)
- Year 3 Blue (Miss Richardson)
- Year 3 Green (Miss Williamson)
- Year 6 Green (Miss Dockey).
- Congratulations to Year 4B (Mr Reid Milligan) who achieved an amazing 100% attendance this week!

Updated Covid Guidance, 28th February 2022
If you need to read this letter in a different language, please click on the translate button (top right)
28th February, 2022
Dear Parents and Carers,
Important Update in Response to Latest Government Covid-19 Guidance
I hope all of our families have had a restful and enjoyable half term break. I am writing in response to the latest Government guidance, which came into effect on Thursday 24th February. As a school, I am proud to say that we have so far managed to ensure minimal disruption for our pupils over the course of the pandemic. Whilst we continue to stress that excellent school attendance is essential for all children in order for them to thrive, we must continue to be sensible in our approach to Covid-19 in order to further reduce infection and disruption within the school community.
What should I do if my child displays symptoms of Covid-19?
The main symptoms of Covid-19 continue to be the following:
- a new continuous cough
- a high temperature
- a loss, or change in, your normal sense of taste and smell
If your child develops any of these symptoms, you should arrange for them to have a PCR test. They should not attend school until you have received confirmation that their test is negative.
What Should I do if my child tests positive for Covid-19?
In line with the latest Government guidance, and in order to safeguard, pupils, families, staff and the wider community, we will continue to ask that children who have tested positive for Covid-19 isolate for at least 5 days, and do not attend school.
Your child should take an LFD test from 5 days after their symptoms started (or the day their test was taken if they did not have symptoms) followed by another one the next day. If both these test results are negative, they should return to school, as long as they feel well enough to do so and do not have a temperature.
What should I do if my child has been in contact with someone who has Covid-19?
If you believe that your child has been in recent contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19, they should still attend school as normal. There is no longer the requirement for contacts to take daily LFD tests. If your child develops Covid-19 symptoms, then they should not attend school and should take a PCR test.
Thank you, as always, for your support as we continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our whole school community.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs J. Stuart
Head Teacher

Parent Evenings, 14th & 16th March 2022
Following on from the success of our previous virtual parents evening in the Autumn Term, we will again be using the SchoolCloud system for our parent evenings in March. You should have received an invitation to parent evenings by email on Wednesday. If you do not have an invitation, please contact the school office. This system allows you to choose your own appointment time with your child’s teacher. You can then attend your appointment using any device (phone, PC, laptop or tablet) and you can attend from home or from work. The parent making the booking can send an additional invitation which means that two parents can attend the same appointment from separate locations.
Appointment bookings are open now and will close at 12pm on Wednesday 9th March 2022. Office staff will be able to support with the booking process if you have any problems.
Statutory Assessment Information
As you will be aware, after two years of disruption caused by the pandemic, all statutory assessments will take place this year. This includes SATs in both Year 2 and Year 6, the Phonics Screening Check in Year 1, and the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4. These assessments are taken by children across England and schools do not choose when they take place. Please refer to dates below; it is essential that children in the year groups specified are in school during their statutory assessments. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office who will direct your call to your child’s class teacher.
- Year 6 SATs – Monday 9th May – Thursday 11th May 2022
- Year 2 SATs – Throughout the month of May 2022

Aspiring to Achieve Day
Next week the children are going to participate in a day of learning about careers and aspirations. We will be sharing this exciting work with you through our Twitter feed.
- Mr Outterside is going to be holding workshops with each year group which are designed to inspire conversations about the children's future ambitions.
- The children will be watching age-appropriate videos which encourage them to challenge gender stereotypes around careers.
- Classes will be sharing the book ‘The North Star’ by Peter H Reynolds about the different paths that we can choose through our lives and how to follow our dreams.
Safer Internet Day
This week we celebrated Safer Internet Day in school. Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people, and to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. Online safety is woven through our curriculum so that children are always revisiting and building upon key areas that will help to educate them to become responsible online citizens. The school website and Twitter (@throckleyprim) are updated regularly with key documentation, handy hints and tips, and various other resources and websites. It is important that we are working together as a partnership to support our children to be able to keep themselves safe online. Please see the attached letter for parent access to the National Online Safety Hub which has a huge bank of information and guidance for parents to play their part at home.
Please Drive and Park Safely
We would like to remind all parents/carers to work together to keep our children safe while travelling to/from school. Please leave your cars at home if you can. The best ways to come to are on foot, on a bike or on a scooter. Active travel helps children (and their grown-ups) to stay happy and healthy. If you must drive to school, please give yourself plenty of time and take extra care when driving and parking. Accidents can happen so quickly and we want everyone to arrive safely to school and back home again.
The car park at the Recreation Ground belongs to the developers of the Meadow Hill Estate and is not part of the school. The parents/carers of Throckley Primary have been given permission to use the car park by the managers of this development, but access can be removed at any time if they decide that it is no longer safe to keep it open. The managers of the car park expect parents/carers to:
- Drive slowly at all times when at the Recreation Ground
- Park in a designated space – the footpaths are for walking safely to school
- Be polite to other users of the car park
Nursery wishlist
Our Nursery team is working to update some of their resources and are asking for help from you! They are running low on the following items:
- Dolls and clothes/accessories such as toy prams, baths, cots, etc.
- Transport toys such as cars, buses, planes, trains, and tracks (complete sets)
- Small animal toys such as plastic farm animals, wild animals, under the sea animals, etc.
If you find that you have any of the above items at home that you were maybe thinking of rehoming or giving away, could you please consider our Nursery? If you have any of the above to donate, please drop them off at the main office. Thank you!

Our yards are getting a makeover!
We understand how much of an impact improving play can make to a school and we want every one of our pupils to have amazing, high quality play during break times. Over the past week, we have introduced more resources to our yards to encourage purposeful and active playtimes.
Our staff have been very busy collecting and sourcing different equipment to keep our pupils busy and it has been wonderful to see so much creative play. We have loved watching houses and roads being built, flags and kites being flown, tyres being rolled and so many smiling faces!
We will continue to introduce resources to create the best playground environments that we can, which engage, entice and excite our pupils.
We will be sending tweets to share the improvements with you. #thrive@throckley

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Curriculum Project
Throckley Primary will be participating in an SMSC project throughout the spring and summer terms which will support the children’s development in this important curriculum area. This project will be led by Mr Mark Outterside, the Operational Lead of the Outer West Learning Trust. Mark will be spending one day per week in school working with our children, staff, governors and parents. Please look out for Mr Outterside around the school and for Tweets about the progress of this project.
Remote Learning
We continue to provide high quality remote education for any children who are unable to attend school due to Covid-19. If your child is isolating but is well enough to complete school work, we ask that you support them in accessing their learning remotely. This will mean that they do not miss out on any vital learning and will help to bridge the gap between home and school. Each day that your child is isolating, an English, maths and foundation subject lesson will be uploaded to Seesaw/Tapestry. These will be aligned with what your child would have been learning, had they been able to attend school. Please upload any completed activities to your child’s learning platform - their class teacher will be delighted to see their work! In addition, don’t forget that one of the best things you can do to support your child when they are at home is to read, read, read! We’d love to hear about the stories you’ve shared or the books your child has read independently while isolating.
Please contact the school office if you have any questions at all about remote learning during your child’s isolation. Thank you so much for your support: Together, we can help to minimise the impact of any Covid-related absence.

Don’t forget to check Seesaw/Tapestry this evening, where you will find your child’s curriculum map for this half term. We hope you enjoy reading all about the wonderful learning happening in your child’s classroom over the coming weeks!

Christmas Message from Mrs Stuart
Dear Parents/Carers,
I wanted to send out a special message to our Throckley families as we all head home for a well-deserved rest. I acknowledge the uncertainty around the rising number of Covid cases, however I would like to reassure you that the school remains dedicated to the children's learning and wellbeing, and we are well prepared for the Spring term, whatever January brings.
I would like to say a special thank you to our hardworking PTFA for ensuring that the children and staff had lots of fun activities to look forward to throughout this term.
I would also like to say a huge THANK YOU to the school staff and Governors. Their dedication, hard work and positivity have ensured that the school has continued to provide outstanding care and education to all of our children.
Finally, thank you to our parents and carers. I am so grateful for your support throughout the term and your understanding around many of our events that have had to take place virtually.
I wish all of you a peaceful and restful Christmas and I look forward to welcoming all of you back on Wednesday 5th January 2022!
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Stuart, Head Teacher

Parent Power 2022 identifies the highest-achieving schools in the UK and is the definitive primary and secondary school rankings guide. We are proud to be ranked the 90th primary school (out of over 16,000) in the country. This ranking puts us in the top 1% of primary schools nationwide.
Class Christmas Videos
The children have been working hard on their class Christmas videos and we can’t wait to share them with you! We will have them uploaded to the website by the end of the day on Wednesday (15th December).

Parent/Carer Survey
Throckley Primary School is committed to improving its service and working practices. As part of this commitment, it is imperative that we ask for feedback about the school from all of our parents and carers. This year’s survey is particularly important as we have just been through an unusual time due to Covid and the children, school staff and parents/carers have had to manage lockdowns, remote learning and adjust to new ways of working.
You will be sent a link today to the survey by text and by email. The survey has been optimised for completion on a phone and will just take a few minutes to complete. Each parent/carer in the family can take the survey, but please complete only one survey per person. The surveys are completely confidential, but if you raise any issues that you would like us to respond to, please type your name into the text field at the end of the survey. It is important that you take this opportunity to express your opinions, and it would be greatly appreciated if you could respond to the survey by Friday 26th November 2021.

10th December: Virtual Pantomime and Christmas Jumper Day

The PTFA is also planning some fun snacks for each class to enjoy while they watch.
We hope you and your children will join us in supporting the ‘Save the Children’ Christmas Jumper Day. The children can come into school in non-uniform and, if they wish, wear a Christmas jumper top or even just some tinsel. We hope that parents, grandparents and other family and friends will enjoy viewing these messages from the comfort of their own homes.
1st – 17th December: Christmas Stories
During December, pupils and teachers all love to share festive stories and this year will be no different. Each class will study a different seasonal tale and enjoy lots of fun activities related to the text.
1st – 17th December: Reading Advent!
At Throckley Primary School, we love to read! This year, each class will be given a reading advent calendar. Each day, children will open a door to a new reading activity – some will be fiction, some non-fiction, but all festive-themed and all lots of fun! Look out for our Christmas holiday reading challenge, too!
17th December: Christmas Parties and Non-uniform Day!
On the final Friday of the term, each class will be celebrating with their friends at a classroom Christmas party with lots of fun games and activities. All children can come into school in non-uniform/party attire.
13th – 17th December: Virtual Christmas Church Service
This year, we are unable to take the children along to St. Mary’s Church for our usual carol services but Reverend Alison is recording a virtual service to tell the children the Nativity story.
The school closes for the Christmas holidays from home time on Friday 17th December and the children will return on Wednesday 5th January (Monday 3/1/22 is a Bank Holiday and Tuesday 4/1/22 is a Staff Training Day).
Although it feels a little early, I am excited to say, ‘Let’s have a very Merry Christmas!’
Yours faithfully,

This year’s survey is particularly important as we have just been through an unusual time due to Covid and the children, school staff and parents/carers have had to manage lockdowns and remote learning and adjust to new ways of working.

Anti-Bullying Week Information
Dear Parents/Carers,
We are in the middle of Anti-Bullying Week and we wanted to share with you the learning that is taking place in school.
At Throckley Primary School, we have the following values:
- LEARNING - We are ready to learn, work hard and make progress.
- CARING - We are gentle, kind and friendly to one another and our environment.
- RESPECT - We are honest, value one another and appreciate our differences.
- TEAMWORK - We work together and are helpful to others.
- SUCCESS - We take responsibility for our own behaviour and do our best.
- PRIDE - We celebrate our accomplishments and are good role models to others.
In order to make sure our children come to school ready to succeed and achieve we need them to feel safe, secure and supported. Knowing what bullying is helps our children to take responsibility for their own actions and gives them the tools and knowledge they need to seek support if they feel they, or a peer, are experiencing unkind behaviour or bullying.
To ensure we are able to prevent bullying we need to act quickly when it takes place and ensure we are using the term correctly. It is essential that we have a shared definition and we are using the definition promoted by the Anti-Bullying Alliance:
Bullying is the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. It can happen face to face or online.
As part of Anti-Bullying Week we are spending lots of time looking at the definition of bullying, what it means and what we can do when we feel worried or concerned for ourselves and others.
The theme of the week set by the Anti-Bullying Alliance is One Kind Word. We will be using this theme to drive our learning and inspire our children to be kind to others (at school and home!). They will be thinking about how little acts of kindness can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us.
How can I help my child?
- Make sure they understand what bullying is.
- Talk about who they can turn to for help. Bullying can take place anywhere. Do they know who to talk to inside and outside of school?
- Discuss how they have the ability to make change happen by seeking help for someone else.
- Talk about their behaviour and how they can be kind to others.
- Make sure your child knows that bullying is wrong and that they need to ask for help if they feel they are being bullied.
- Remember bullying can happen face to face or online.
Please speak to school staff if you have any concerns about your child experiencing bullying.
Our anti-bullying policy is available on our website. You can also find more useful information here:
https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week/parents-and-carers
Yours sincerely,
Miss Emma Liddle, PHSE Co-ordinator

Driving and Parking Safely Around Our School – Help keep our children safe!
We encourage all of our families to walk, cycle or scoot to school whenever possible. A walk in the fresh air is good for physical and mental health and for our environment, so please walk when you can.
We understand that there will be times when you need to drive to school and we ask that, on these occasions, you take extra care on your journey to school and when parking the car. Please park in legal parking spaces only and not on the grass verges, in front of a drive or in the bus stop. Please drive VERY slowly when at the Recreation Ground and look out at all times for children who are walking or riding across the park to school. We want every child to arrive safely to school in the morning and then arrive back home safely again in the afternoon. We are all in a rush in the morning and afternoon, but taking time and care at these times of day could save the life of a child. Thank you.

Guidance for Schools from Newcastle City Council on the use of Legal Sanctions for Non-Attendance
This information has been updated in September 2021. We want to remind our parents that school attendance is mandatory. Parents and carers have a duty to ensure that their child of compulsory school age attends regularly at the school where they are registered.
It is important that parents and carers understand the local authority sanctions in place for non-attendance.
Legal Monitoring
- A request for legal monitoring will be submitted to the Local Authority when a pupil’s attendance falls below 90% with 10 sessions (5 days) of unauthorised absences over a period of 10 weeks. If a parent fails a legal monitoring period, a fine of £60 (per parent) will be incurred. This increases to £120 if not paid within 21 days. If a case goes to court, the fine will be determined by a judge and therefore may be higher (plus will include court costs).
Unauthorised Absences and Holiday Absences
- An absence due to a holiday is not a valid reason to be off school and will be classed as unauthorised absence unless there are exceptional circumstances. An Absence Notification Form must always be completed in advance of the holiday so we know where your child is when they are not in school (forms are available from the office). If you wish for exceptional circumstances to be considered (and a holiday absence authorised) then you must put your request in writing to the Chair of Governors prior to the absence.
- Where a pupil of compulsory school-age has 10 sessions (5 days) of unauthorised holiday absence over a 12 week period, a referral will be made to the local authority to issue a fixed penalty notice of £60 per child per parent. This increases to £120 per child per parent if not paid within 21 days. In some instances, the case can be taken to court and the penalty decided on by the judge. Newcastle Local Authority have seen fines as high as £660 issued during the academic year 2018-2019.
- Where parents have not made contact with the school regarding a genuine reason for absence, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.
- If school is not informed of the reason for a pupil absence, a home visit may be carried out by the school’s Welfare Officer and if no contact is made at all a referral may be made to social services.
- Where parents make contact with the school but the reason does not fall within the agreed authorised absences of the school’s attendance policy, this will also be recorded as unauthorised absence.
Unauthorised Absence due to lateness
- When a pupil is late before the register closes (9.15am) they will receive a late mark.
- When a pupil arrives to school late after the register has closed (after 9.15am), the entire morning session is recorded as an unauthorised absence. 10 sessions of unauthorised lates, with attendance below 90%, will also be referred to the Local Authority for legal monitoring

Update on Covid
We have had a small number of confirmed Covid cases for children who attend our school. We continue to follow Government guidance and are monitoring cases closely. We ensure classrooms are well-ventilated and that hygiene expectations, such as regular hand-washing and sanitising, are maintained. Please see the attached letter for more information.
Please try our new morning Sport & Wellbeing Club for Key Stage Two (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6)
This new club is the perfect start to the day for our older children. Children who attend will have the choice of either joining in with sporting activities with Mr Meyer or participating in some mindfulness and well-being inspired activities (such as Yoga, music and art) with other members of staff. This is a club where children can either run off some steam; or relax and unwind. The children will be asked about the activities they most enjoy, so the club will be tailored to their interests.
Each year group in Key Stage Two has an allotted day:
Monday – Year 6
Tuesday – Year 5
Wednesday – Year 4
Thursday – Year 3
The club begins at 8.15am and club staff escort the children to meet their class teacher ready for the 8.55am bell. There will be no need to sign up to this club; if your child wishes to attend, simply bring them along to the Dining Hall doors at 8.15am on their class’s specific day.
Reminder About Uniform and Hairstyle Expectations
It is wonderful to see children looking so smart around school! Uniform expectations are so important; they help children to feel part of a team and also prepare them for the expectations in secondary school and the world of work. Children should wear grey or black skirt/pinafore/trousers for school - please ensure that no leggings are worn. A reminder also that our uniform policy states that extreme hairstyles are not permitted. This includes partially or fully bleached hair and lines/patterns cut into hair. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Covid Information and Advice for September 2021
24th September 2021
Dear Parent/Carer,
Information and advice about COVID-19
We have been advised that there have been a small number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 for children who attend our school. We know that you may find this concerning, but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England and Newcastle City Council’s Public Health Team. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child.
The school will continue to ensure that all confirmed cases of COVID-19 do not attend school until the end of their self-isolation period. Schools are no longer required to carry out routine contact tracing of anyone that has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. This is now carried out by NHS Test and Trace. They will work with either the positive case or their parents or carers to identify close contacts.
Anyone under the age of 18 years and 6 months who are told by NHS Test and Trace that they are close contact of a positive case are strongly advised to get a PCR test as soon as possible. They should do this even if they have returned a negative Lateral Flow Device test recently. Book a PCR test online at https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or ring 119 (free of charge). Close contacts should not take a PCR test if they have received a positive PCR test result in the last 90 days, unless they develop any new symptoms of COVID-19. This is because it is possible for PCR tests to remain positive for some time after COVID-19 infection. Your child can attend school whilst awaiting their PCR result.
If the PCR test is positive, your child must self-isolate for 10 days from the date of the test. NHS Test and Trace will confirm the dates with you. In this time your child must not go to school or to public areas: they must remain at home and must not mix with anyone outside of their household.
If a negative test is recorded, then your child can continue to attend school as normal.
What to do if your child develops symptoms of COVID-19
For most people, especially children, COVID-19 will be a mild illness.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:
- a new continuous cough and/or
- high temperature and/or
- a loss of, or change in, normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)
If your child develops any of these symptoms of COVID-19, they must remain at home for at least 10 days from the date their symptoms first started. You need to arrange for them to have a PCR test for COVID-19.
To book a test, either call 119 or go to the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test
They must self-isolate until the test result is known. If positive they must self-isolate as advised by NHS Test and Trace. Your household must follow the ‘Stay at Home’ guidance at www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection
Support to Self-Isolate
If your child is entitled to an income-based Free School Meal this can still be provided by Chartwells as a daily meal collection. Please contact the office by 9.30am to place an order for the meal.
If you need support with self-isolation Newcastle City Council’s Welfare and Wellbeing Team may be able to help you. If you can, you should try to seek help from your friends, family and community first, or look online at www.newcastle.gov.uk for local support services. Where this is not possible, the Welfare and Wellbeing team can help.
Visit www.newcastle.gov.uk/welfare or call 0800 170 7001 (8am-8pm Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm Saturday) to get the support you need.
You may also be entitled to a Test and Trace Support Payment. Apply online at https://newcastle.gov.uk/TestandTraceSupportPayments
How to stop COVID-19 spreading
There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with COVID-19:
Remember; ‘Hands, Face, Space and Let Fresh Air In’:
- Wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
- Wash your hands as soon as you get home.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze.
- Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.
- Try to stay apart from anyone you don’t live with as much as possible.
- Use a face covering when you are indoors crowded places such as supermarkets and public transport
- If meeting others, try to do so outside as much as possible. If inside, open the window to let fresh air in
You, and anyone over the age of 11years are encouraged to take part in twice weekly Lateral Flow Device (LFD) testing for COVID-19. This helps to identify those who do not have symptoms of the virus and helps prevent it spreading to others. You can get free LFD test kits from most pharmacies or by ringing 119 or online at https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests
All those over the age of 16 can now get a COVID-19 vaccine. Please take up the offer of the vaccine. They are safe and effective. They give you the best protection against COVID-19. There are locations across the city where you can be vaccinated; for details go to www.newcastle.gov.uk/covidvaccine
Further information
Further information is available at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus
Thank you for your support. Your efforts do help to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 to others in the community.
Yours sincerely

Please arrive on time, every day
We have noticed that there have been an increasing number of children arriving late to school this week. It is essential that all children arrive on time, every day. Lessons begin at 8.55am and, now more than ever as we all begin to move forward after last year's school closures, we want every pupil to be part of every minute of the school day so that they do not miss out on vital learning. It can also have a real impact on children's self-confidence when they arrive late into their classroom, once all of their friends have arrived, settled in and begun their learning tasks. We need to continue to keep all of our pupils, staff and wider community safe, and children arriving late means unnecessary movement around school, which we would still like to keep to a minimum. Thank you for your support with this; you supporting your child by ensuring they're in school on time is of a huge benefit to both their academic progress and well-being.
Individual and Sibling (brothers and sisters) School Photographs
Phototronics, our school photographer, will be visiting the school on Tuesday, 5th October. They will be taking individual photographs of all children across the school. If you would like a sibling photograph (brothers and sisters) you will need to make the request by completing a QDP survey which we will be sending to you next week. Please look out for the survey link and complete it straight away if you would like your children to be in a photograph together.
Key Stage Two (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) Sport and Wellbeing Club
This exciting new club starts next week and is the perfect start to the day for our older children. Children who attend will have the choice of either joining in with sporting activities with Mr Meyer, which will undoubtedly make them feel full of energy ready for the day ahead, or mindful and well-being inspired activities, which will help children to feel calm and ready for whatever the day brings. This is a club where children can either run off some steam; or relax and unwind.
The Sport and Wellbeing Club is open to children across Key Stage Two – each year group has an allotted day, as follows:
Monday – Year 6
Tuesday – Year 5
Wednesday – Year 4
Thursday – Year 3
The club will begin at 8.15am. Club staff will then escort children to meet their class teacher ready for the 8.55am bell. There will be no need to sign up to this club; if your child wishes to attend, simply bring them along to the Dining Hall doors at 8.15am on their class’s specific day.
Lunchtime Clubs are starting next week.
Starting next week, children in Years 1 – 6 will have a choice of clubs to join at lunch times. The teachers will be signing the children up for clubs, so you don’t need to do anything. We have a range of clubs to suit all interests and the clubs on offer for this term are as follows:
- Y1 & Y2 Art Club
- Y3 – Y6 Singing Club
- Y3 – Y6 Cross Stitch Club
- School Council
- Y1 & Y2 Sports Clubs (Children will learn a range of skills and play a variety of sports and these clubs will be available everyday on the yard).
- Y3 – Y6 Sports Clubs (Boys/Girls Football, Dodgeball, Netball – one sport available each day).
Free School Meals – Online portal
During the summer holidays the School Admissions Team has tested and launched the Free School Meal module on the Citizen’s Portal for parents.
https://www.newcastlelea.org/CitizenPortal_LIVE/en
This new way of applying for Free School Meals has advantages for parents, schools and the local authority.
- Parents find out the result of their Free School Meal application instantly
- If a parent has applied on the portal and they become eligible later, the portal will tell parents that they have become eligible
- Schools will find out the result of a parent’s application sooner than if a parent applies via a paper form
- Applicant information only needs input once and younger children can be added to a parents claim as they reach nursery/school age
- Parents of children who are new to the city can apply for FSM in the same place they are applying for a school
- The portal fully complies with GDPR requirements and parents can choose to remove their consent via the portal. They are aware of the information we hold and how it is used.
Reception Reading Information Film
Parents of children in Reception will be sent a link today to a film on our website which explains how we teach reading in our school. You can watch the film at a time that is convenient to you, and then send a message to your child’s class teacher if you have any questions. The film will be posted in the Throckley TV section of our website, so it is also available for all parents across the school.
Bikeability Dates for Years 4, 5 & 6
If you have a child in any of these year groups, please note that we will be providing cycling training in November. These sessions are fun and inclusive and we want all children in each class to be able to participate. If your child has a bike, please can you check it is in good repair and ready to use for the session? If you child does not have a bike, please can you try to borrow one for them to use? The school will be able to arrange for a small number of bikes, but we won’t have enough for everyone. If you are unable to provide a bike for your child, please contact the office and let us know so that we can support you.
The dates are as follows:
Year 4 – Wednesday, 3rd November 2021
Year 5 – Monday & Tuesday, 22nd & 23rd November 2021
Year 6 – Monday & Tuesday, 29th & 30th November 2021

Parent E-newsletter for 10th September 2021
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a wonderful week it has been here at Throckley Primary! It has been a pleasure to spend time with children across school each day; they are happy and have settled quickly into their new routines. All pupils have returned to school looking smart in their full uniforms, and with excellent behaviours for learning. It has been fantastic to see children on time and raring to go ready for the bell at 8.55am!
The last two academic years have brought with them challenges for us all, however I am sure you will agree that our wonderful pupils are shining examples of resilience and positivity. On behalf of all Governors and staff, I would like to extend my gratitude to all parents and carers; your patience and support has been gratefully received throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Let us all hope that this year is less disruptive for our children. While some things may be uncertain as we go forward, please rest assured that any changes or updates will be communicated with you without hesitation. We’re still all in this together.
I’d like to remind you about our inspiring curriculum here at Throckley Primary School; subject leaders and class teachers work tirelessly to ensure that children’s learning is purposeful, engaging and builds on their existing knowledge. Our curriculum drivers are:
- Understanding our Place in the World
- Aspiring to Achieve
- Broadening Horizons
We aim to open doors for children through both their learning across the curriculum, and the rich and diverse stories they share. We want children’s experiences here at Throckley to be exciting while also supporting children in developing a broad and balanced world-view. We have recently spent time looking closely at ‘The Throckley Experience’ and have a wonderful programme of trips, excursions and events in place over the coming year, that will be both enriching and memorable for children. To find out more about our Curriculum, please visit this section on the school website.
We continue to be proud of our ethos and culture here at Throckley. Our values remain at the heart of our school. They are Respect, Teamwork, Pride, Success, Caring and Learning. This half term, children across school are sharing a special book called Just Because, by Mac Barnett, Isabelle Arsenault, Isabelle Arsenault. This text has been chosen as it links closely with the value which is our focus for this half term: Learning. Keep your eyes peeled for achievement stars linked to ‘Learning’ and, when you’re notified of an achievement via the parent app, be sure to ask your child what made their teacher feel so impressed!
We hope you enjoy looking through the Breadth of Study document for your child’s year group, which will be shared with you via Seesaw and gives an overview of the learning your child will enjoy over the course of the year. Class newsletters will also be available on Seesaw today and contain information specific to your child’s class, such as P.E. days and homework arrangements.
We are always looking for new ways to develop our practice here at Throckley. This academic year, we are trialling a new and exciting behaviour management system in school. Trackit Lights is a permanent feature on every teacher’s interactive whiteboard. It’s an engaging, motivational behaviour management tool that allows teachers to quickly log positive and negative behaviour to motivate pupils. We know that our pupils will love to see their positive behaviours being rewarded daily, leading to in-class incentives and rewards. The system also supports teachers and pupils to discuss negative behaviour and allows pupils to reflect and restore their positive attitudes.
If you have any questions at all about anything to do with your child’s progress or wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via the school office or Seesaw.
Reminder about the drop-off times in the morning. We have allocated five minutes for dropping off at the gates (8.50am – 8.55am). Please ensure that your child arrives at school for this drop off window.
Please find two links below to two new agreement documents:
- Home/School Agreement
- IT Acceptable Use Agreement.
The text of the documents is in the main body of the survey and you enter your name and the date to agree. We have tried to make these documents short and easy to sign, so we would be grateful if you could enter your signature by the end of the day on Wednesday (15/9/21). Thank you.
Here’s to another fantastic year at Throckley Primary School!
Yours sincerely,
Mrs J Stuart
