Eco Warriors!
Already this year, Eco-Club have been busy promoting sustainability and ecology, across school and beyond, helping our school community learn more about the impact that our small, everyday actions have on the wider environment, and ways that we can all help meet the needs of future generations without damaging our planet. This term, Eco-Club delivered a whole school assembly demonstrating which classroom articles we can recycle and which would risk the recycling being rejected. Our Eco-Club are proudly keeping an eye on this in class! In November, Eco-Club had great fun at the North East Net Zero Heroes Event at the Civic Centre, learning many of the different ways to save energy in school, from limiting food waste to mapping biodiversity and harnessing green energy. As December arrived, they had the chance to put some of this knowledge to work, helping our Climate Action Plan visitors conduct a heat survey of the school, while spotting even more opportunities to use lower energy equipment and helping to remind adults to turn equipment off when it's not in use. Great work, everyone!
Yoga Club
During autumn term, the children have learned a variety of poses, meditation and breathing techniques. They have focused on developing a toolkit to support their mental wellbeing and build upon their fundamental skills in P.E to support with movement, strength and flexibility. By the end of the term, the children have become physically stronger and strengthened their core to support with everyday movements such as sitting on a chair, standing from a seated position and bending down to reach the floor. The children now have an understanding of how breath work can support regulating their emotions and how it can be used in everyday life.

We focused on building resilience, teamwork and listening skills. We also discussed the importance of using good oracy skills when playing games together. The children enjoyed supporting others to learn familiar games, they used their oracy skills to explain rules. They encouraged each other even when they found a game challenging. The children have really developed their resilience. To begin with, some children found losing tricky, however by the end of the term they we more comfortable with losing and understood that failure was ok and a necessity to learning new things. By the end of the term all the children were confident in playing with each other and chose to play with those they wouldn’t normally interact with. It has been lovely to see new friendship form in board game club.
Times Tables Rockstars!
In Times Tables Rock Stars club, Year 4 children have been practising their times tables ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check at the end of the year. They are making amazing progress and some children have now reached ‘gone green’ status on their heat maps showing they know all their facts up to 12 x 12.
Art Club
We looked at the work of a local artist, Julia Roxburgh and we took inspiration from her amazing ceramic vase designs! The children initially had to plan their own vase design, thinking carefully about shapes and colours they would like to use. They then practised moulding techniques using plastercine before we made our final product using clay! Once they were dry, we had to paint them to match our designs.
Reading Rocks!
In reading club, we have been exploring the book ‘The Bad Guys’ by Aaron Blabely. As part of this, we have used drama and performances to bring to life the characters and their personas. Using expression, we have read aloud many chapters from the book to perfectly convey how the characters are feeling. Feeling inspired by the book, the children designed their own bad guy for the story.
Girls’ Football
As part of celebrations for #InternationalWomensDay we sent a Year 4 and a Year 6 girls’ football team to a tournament on Friday at Walker Activity Dome. The girls had a brilliant time as they performed with resilience and pride. Well done, Throckley!

Science ambassadors from every year group in KS1 and KS2 are invited to rehearse practical tests of the forces in the natural world, in order to provide examples to the wider school of challenges that all children can complete at home using everyday resources. To date, they have constructed paper helicopters to explore the interaction of air resistance and gravity, followed by investigating the effect of convection and air currents with homemade Christmas decorations. All challenges will be shared with the wider school community as part of the STEAM week showcase, to further cement the role science has for all of us in understanding the world around us.
