Our Community
We are proud of our increasingly diverse local community. We are proud of our heritage. We are proud of our school and the contribution it makes to the area in which we live.
Reception
As part of ‘Our Community,’ the children in Reception made their own beanstalks. These were inspired by our class book, Jack and the Beanstalk. The children used their fine motor skills to thread the cereal and paper. Once we had finished them, we decided the animals in our area would appreciate a tasty snack so we decided to take our beanstalks to forest school. We planted our beanstalks in the ground and when we returned the next day, the cereal was gone. The animals in our community had enjoyed a lovely snack made by Reception.
Year 1
In Year 1, as part of our Thrive activities, we visited our new allotment. The children worked together to dig and plant a new tree, which we are excited to watch grow and change over the summer months.
Year 2
Year 2 spent time using their oracy skills to discuss the pros and cons of our community.
Many of the groups created a huge list of pros such as feeling safe, people being friendly and fun things to school. One area for development that arose in every group was the litter in school grounds. Year 2 felt that this did not reflect our values and felt it was an important issue to tackle. They headed up to the field armed with litter pickers and bags on a mission to get rid of some of the rubbish that had been left.
Once they returned to the classroom, Year 2 wanted to ensure that litter didn’t become a regular issue. They worked as a team with some children writing a letter to Mrs Brown and Mrs Giblin asking to buy more bins, while some made posters to stop people from dropping litter to begin with.
Year 3
This half term, Year 3 have been reflecting on community and how to be a good team worker as part of one. We have explored a range of communities and discussed how we can make our community more diverse and empathetic. During PE, we worked in teams to successfully complete some teambuilding activities. We reflected on qualities we need within a community, and used these to support our peers and groups.
Year 4
Year 4 have been diving into their THRIVE activities with enthusiasm, teamwork, and plenty of creativity. Today, we challenged ourselves to work together in new ways, ordering ourselves into different categories and using a range of communication methods to succeed. From silent organisation to lively discussion, everyone played their part and supported one another. Along the way, we learned more about each other’s strengths, personalities, and ideas, and it’s helped us grow into a truly amazing community. We’re proud of how well we collaborated and how confidently we tackled every activity together. 👬
Year 5
Year 5 looked closely at our community, particularly the school gates and Hexham Road. We thought about what problems face our community today, such as: the availability of on-street parking at busy times; traffic and crossings for children and adults; and litter or animals in the area. Then, in groups, we created posters to give helpful tips to members of the community and remind them why we care for where we live, work and go to school. These will be laminated and put up around the school and community. .
Year 6
The police visited Year 6 to lead a workshop on road safety, helping students understand the importance of staying safe in their local community. The children asked thoughtful questions, listened attentively, and actively engaged with the session, showing a strong awareness of how their actions can contribute to a safer neighbourhood for everyone.
