Years 4 & 6 Dodgeball Lessons
Fri 28 Sep 2018Ducking, diving and throwing have been on full display during our Years 4 and 6 PE sessions so far this year. Agility and accuracy have been key focuses and we have been using targets to practise aiming the ball at different heights and throwing the ball at different speeds. The children have then put their new accuracy to the test in amazing, competitive games of dodgeball. We will be competing in dodgeball tournaments this term, and we can’t wait to use these new skills to bring home some more trophies for the cabinet at the front of school! -
Year 6 Visit to Safetyworks
Fri 28 Sep 2018As part of the Junior Wardens partnership, our Y6 classes went to visit Safety Works in order to improve their knowledge of antisocial behaviour, intimidation, first aid and fire safety. Throughout the afternoon, they were introduced to members of the police, St John’s Ambulance and the fire service. Safety Works is set up like a mini Newcastle with shops, roads and even the Metro! Each crew member walked the children through a different scenario which helped them to improve their awareness and understanding of safety. It was a fantastic experience and the children already feel more confident. -

Year 6 at Hawkhirst
Fri 21 Sep 2018Year 6 had a lovely time at Hawkhirst. This residential trip is always a fantastic opportunity for the children and staff to get to know each other before the children embark on their final year at Throckley Primary School. As well as the children learning how to make their own beds (you're welcome!), they participated in some outdoor learning and adventure activities which helped them to develop self-confidence and to discover the amazing things that they are capable of doing. Their attitudes and behaviour were exemplary when they were away and we're all very proud of how they did during the visit. -

Great North Exhibition Celebration Event
Fri 14 Sep 2018Throughout the summer term, children from across the OWL Trust attended events about design, science and the arts at the Great North Exhibition. Using the Exhibition trips as inspiration, each school created a display and a piece of art about their experiences and then shared it at the celebration event which was held today at Walbottle Campus. Mrs Maddison’s Year 3 class attended the event and carried a beautiful banner that they had made which shows the famous landmarks of Newcastle. They also created a green screen newsfeed presentation which was played during the event. Mrs Stuart visited with the children and was really impressed with their work and the way that they represented the school. -
Skills for Life - Olly Organisation
Fri 14 Sep 2018Last year, we introduced an exciting new programme which supports children to develop the skills necessary to succeed in primary school, secondary school and beyond! ‘LORIC – Skills for Life’ is now embedded in all that we do at Throckley Primary. We believe that success in curriculum subjects is essential, but we see our role as supporting much more than that. By focussing on 5 key skills (leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative and communication), we want to ensure that all children leave our school fully equipped and ready for their next challenge!
We will be focussing on one area of LORIC each half term, starting with the skill of organisation! Since the beginning of term, children across the school have been exploring what it means to be organised; and we have to say, we’ve been more than impressed by the results! Children are arriving at school fully prepared for the day; P.E. kits are all hanging neatly on pegs; pencils are sharpened and ready to go; reading records are returned each morning; what a fantastic start! Watch out for stickers on jumpers and LORIC achievement stars on the Parent App as we celebrate the progress children are making in their organisation skills.
You can help at home, too! Why not encourage your child to pack their book bag each evening? Or ask them to fold and pack their kit bag the night before a sports club? Let’s start as we mean to go on and have a huge push on organisation – at home and at school! We hope you too can see the benefits of this exciting programme.

Healthy Lunches at Throckley Primary
Fri 07 Sep 2018During our health & wellbeing week in the summer term of last year, children across the school used the Change for Life food scanner app to learn about making healthy choices for lunches and snacks. Children who eat our school meals, automatically receive a nutritionally balanced, delicious and healthy meal, but when we analysed packed lunches in summer term, we found that only 1% of them met the nutritional guidelines. Most of our children’s packed lunches contain too much sugar and fat and don’t include all of the healthy items that are recommended by the Eat Well guidance. Nutritionally balanced packed lunches should include the following:
- One portion of starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
- At least one portion of fruit and vegetables
- One portion of dairy such as cheese, yogurt or fromage frais
- One portion of protein such as beans, fish, eggs, meat within the sandwich/wrap/pasta.
- Water or plain milk
- One small treat such as popcorn, baked crisps or a plain biscuit
Healthy school lunches are going to be a School Council project for the 2018-19 academic year. As part of the project, we will be sending home advice to parents/carers and working with children to make healthier choices. We will keep you updated with our progress throughout the year.
Remember that children in Reception, Y1 & Y2 receive Universal Free School Meals and we are happy for children to have a mixed meal pattern of school meals and packed lunches. The current menus are on the website If you would like your child to eat school dinners, please see the office.
