Y4 Science Lesson About the Digestive System
Fri 27 Nov 2020Year 4 loved investigating the digestive system in science this week. They used plastic bags to break down the food like a stomach would, then pushed the food through a pair of tights to mimic our intestines. They squeezed out the liquid which showed nutrients being delivered to the body and finally snipped a hole in the tights to show any waste leaving the body.

Year 6 Science Lesson About the Circulatory System
Fri 27 Nov 2020As part of our studies in ‘Animals, including humans’, Year 6 have been investigating the human circulatory system and the functionality of the human heart. The pupils covered a range of science skills when they took a (very!) close look at an ox's heart. As the heart of an ox is similar to that of a human, the dissection gave the children a real insight into the human circulatory system. The Throckley scientists carried out a careful risk assessment to ensure that everyone stayed safe during the lesson. At first, some of the children were a little nervous about getting so close to a real animal heart, but once they got started, they were fine, and it was interesting for them to see such a vital organ up close. Before the teacher did any dissection, the class observed the external appearance of the heart and observed that muscle is red, and fat is white. Then, the teacher – very carefully – sliced the heart open so that the children could identify and discuss the important sections of the heart.

Year 5 Arctic Explorers
Fri 20 Nov 2020This half-term, Year 5 have become Antarctic explorers as they learn all about the continent in their geography lessons. This has been especially exciting as Miss Richardson’s brother, Connor, is currently travelling to Antarctica as part of his job with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Because of this, Year 5 have been given exclusive access to videos, photos and lots of information about what makes a successful expedition. BAS have also asked Year 5 to create flags for Antarctica as part of a national competition. The winner will have a photo taken of their flag in Antarctica with the BAS team!

Mr Reid Milligan's Science Challenge!
Fri 20 Nov 2020Over half term, children from Reception to Year 6 completed Mr Reid Milligan's Science Challenge: how can you propel a foil boat with only washing up liquid? The results were brilliant with a special well done to those of you who tested different designs of boat! The children's video explanations were amazing; they were able to explain their findings confidently and used lots of scientific vocabulary!

Parent Zone Online Safety Assembly
Fri 13 Nov 2020On Wednesday, Years 3 to 6 had a fun afternoon participating in a live assembly with Google Internet Legends. They covered the different pillars of internet safety together, virtually, over YouTube. This included secure passwords, sharing images, the dangers of phishing, being kind online and being brave to report concerns to an adult.
All the class teachers were able to send in the children's ideas and answers to the presenters, who then gave a shoutout to everyone! Throughout the assembly, the children were looking for hidden letters, which in the end spelt 'INTERLAND.' This is an online safety game that children can access via: https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_uk/interland.
Just before the end of the assembly, the presenters reminded all the children to share their learning with families and friends to help everyone to be safe online. If you would like more support, you can access online safety tips here: https://www.parents.parentzone.org.uk/legendaryparent.

Remembrance Day
Fri 13 Nov 2020Classes across the school observed Remembrance Day with special activities such as:
- Reception watched 'Poppies' on CBeebies, which is a short, child friendly animation about the war and shows the poppy fields afterwards. They also learned that people wear purple poppies to remember the animals that were involved in the war too. The children’s favourite task was making their own remembrance crosses using cutting skills and placing them in the flower beds beneath Mrs Stuart’s and Mrs Cunningham’s windows.
- Year 1 used a number of different skills including cutting, colouring and drawing, to create a beautiful poppy picture.
- Year 5 investigated how square numbers came to have their name. The children found out that because you multiply a number by itself, you can make squares with four equal sides. Inspired by Remembrance Day, the children created their very own square poppy fields to represent as many square numbers as possible, and then used reasoning and problem-solving skills to calculate the area.
- Year 6 did some work around The ‘Last Post’ in their History lesson. They listened to the music and then discussed the different emotions this evoked. They then analysed the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, by John Mcrae, before creating a poppy of their own that analysed words which symbolised fallen soldiers.
