Cycling Progression at Throckley Primary School

At Throckley Primary we believe that learning to safely ride a bike is an important life skill.  For many young people, cycling provides an inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly-way to get to school and to other activities.  Children across our school have several opportunities to learn to ride bikes, to develop their skills and to practice riding safely on roads in the local community.

Children in our school start learning to cycle when they are in Nursery & Reception using balance bikes during curricular PE.  They can then further develop their skills during lunchtime balance bike clubs when they are in Years 1 & 2.   Bikeability Levels 1 & 2 take place in Years 4 & 5, with an optional ‘Learn to Ride’ session for children who have not yet mastered riding a bike.  Bikeability L1 is delivered within school grounds and teaches basic skills such as balance and control.  Bikeability L2 takes place on quiet roads in Throckley and gives children the confidence to cycle in traffic for short journeys, such as cycling to school.

Newcastle City Council has received national funding to develop safe routes for cycling across the city and we want our children to be able to use these future cycle ways as confident and skilled cyclists.
