• Parent & Child Together Sessions

  We are pleased that so many parents and carers were able to join us this week for our Parent and Child Together sessions.  The children love to have you in school and to share their day with you.  These sessions enable us to get to know each other, which is so important when we are working together to educate your children.  We hope that you enjoyed them as much as we did!  

  

• Year 3 Smart Scoot

  Our Year 3 classes have participated in the Smart Scoot programme today.  The Newcastle City Council Road Safety Team has delivered sessions which teach the children how to check that their scooters are safe and how to ride their scooters safely in the community.  The children also learned about the importance of good manners while riding a scooter and how to keep other people safe when sharing footpaths.  Finally, the children have learned how important it is to wear a safety helmet at all times.  Accidents can happen very quickly, and helmets protect the children from head injuries.

  

• Year 5 OWL Trust Rugby League Festival

  Children in the Year 5 classes have been receiving rugby coaching this term from the Newcastle Thunder Rugby League Club.  All of their learning was put to the test today in a festival of rugby which was held at Walbottle Campus.  This programme has given the children the opportunity to learn a new sport, meet friends from other local schools and compete on the fantastic new sports pitches at     Walbottle Campus.  Thank you to Newcastle Thunder for including our school in this project.  The Newcastle Thunder Community Coaches are starting a new rugby league team which will train at  Walbottle Campus for children who are 7 - 12 years old.  If your child is interested in joining this team, please contact Steve Beaty on 07984630083 for more information.

  

• Y5 WOW Traffic Survey & Air Pollution Monitor Maths Lesson

  As part of our Walk to School ‘WOW’ project and year 5’s current maths topic (statistics), we took a trip down to the school gates and conducted a traffic survey on Hexham Road. Our observations found that cars were the most commonly used mode of transport and this is causing many detrimental effects to people’s health and safety in our community. We displayed our results in a table and made several  conclusions and comparisons using the data.

  In another lesson, we used the data from our Air Pollution Tracker that sits on Hexham Road. We compared the morning data from 18^th September (a normal school day) to the data on 20^th September when we held our ‘walking bus’ event from Sainsbury’s. The data showed a reduction to the pollution levels from cars and other vehicles.  We displayed the data on a line graph like the one in the photograph below to show the  difference our walk to school event made. Well done again to everyone who walked to school on that day - we all helped to reduce the pollution levels in our community. 

  

• Y5 at Dilston Physic Garden

  In order to explore their class reading book, Year 5 visited Dilston Physic Garden where they enjoyed a magical day experiencing authentic Hogwarts lessons of potions and herbology just like Harry Potter!  Each plant in a physic garden has the power to heal or keep you healthy.  They learned all about the  science of how the plants work and which chemicals act on which body system. Using the plants from the garden, they designed a healing lip balm infused with cherry which they then decorated and brought home to use.  The children also took part in a botanical brain booster quiz and had a chance to discover the beautiful garden. The children had a wonderful time learning in the sunshine and fresh air.

  

• Y4 at Segedunum

  As part of their Roman topic, Year 4 visited Segedunum Roman Fort where they trained to be Roman soldiers and had the opportunity to look at Roman artifacts.  Throughout the trip, the children thought about their enquiry questions, ’What does it mean to be strong?’ and ’Was the Roman invasion good for Britain?’.  While exploring these History questions, they handled Roman artifacts and some equipment which would have been used by Roman soldiers.  They also toured the site and completed activities in the museum which helped them to understand the Roman invasion and its consequences.

  

• National Poetry Day

  On Thursday we celebrated National Poetry Day. Each class received a special gift: a wrapped book which had been chosen just for them. The children loved unwrapping their present and sharing the wonderful poems inside. Lots of children rehearsed different extracts and had fun performing them with their friends. Ask your child which  poet they focused on.  Can they recite any poems for you?   

  

• 2019-20 School Council

  Year 1 - Year 6 classes have held elections for our School Council for 2019-20.  Two children have been elected from each year group and they will have the responsibility of representing the children in their classes in School Council meetings with Miss Liddle.  These elections help children to learn about the British value of Democracy and the democratic process and through their representatives, the children in school have a pupil voice.  With their classes, the School Council will decide on the projects that they would like to work on throughout the year and they will have the opportunity to present the ideas and opinions from their classes to Mrs Stuart and the Governors.  We have also created two new roles of School Sports Captain and Vice-Captain.  These children will be responsible for reporting sporting events and announcing sporting awards in assembly.  Congratulations to:

• Year 6 at Hawkhirst

  Our Year 6 children have been away on their residential visit to Hawkhirst this week.  This trip helps them to develop their confidence as they face the challenges of the wider world and discover the  amazing things that they are capable of doing.  The time away together also gives the children and staff the opportunity to get to know each other and to learn how to work as a team as they embark on their final year at Throckley Primary.  Their attitudes and behaviour were exemplary when they were away and we are all very proud of how they participated in all of the outdoor activities.  More photographs will be posted in the Galleries section next week.

  

• Pirate Adventure in our Reception Classes

  Our two reception classes have had an exciting start to their Pirate topic.  In the first week the pirates delivered a present of fish food to the classes and in the second week they delivered a fish tank to each class.  Last Friday they delivered two brown bags and the children had to guess what was in bags.  The pirates had given each class two lovely little fish!  Throughout this term the children will be learning how to care for their fish and linking that learning to how we care for others in our community.  As part of their learning about British Values and Democracy, they have voted on the names for the fish.  Freya & Toby are in Reception Blue and Bubble & Squeak are in Reception Green.  Thank you pirates!
