New School Chef
Fri 18 Jan 2019We are pleased to announce that Chartwells have appointed a new chef in our school. June joined the kitchen staff back in November and is working with her team to provide an excellent meal service. June has a great deal of experience cooking for children and the atmosphere in the dining hall is lovely. The food is delicious and the staff and children are thoroughly enjoying their lunch times! If your child would like to try our school meals, please speak to the school office. Remember that all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 can eat for free. -

Speak a New Language Club
Fri 11 Jan 2019Speak a New Language Club exchanges Christmas Cards with a school in France.
Last term our Speak a New Language Club introduced themselves to a school in France by sending a Christmas card that they had made. They wrote the card in French and English and they each included a little card with information about the things that they like to do. The children in France also introduced themselves by sending cards to Throckley and the photographs above show our children reading the messages that were sent to them in French and English. Miss King, who speaks several languages, runs this club and she has an exciting project planned for the Spring Term. The children in the club will be designing a booklet about their school to send to the children in France!

Parent Governor Vacancy
Fri 11 Jan 2019Are you interested in being a Parent Governor?
We are looking for a parent to join our governing body team. Governors at Throckley Primary play a very active part in working with Mrs Stuart and the School Leadership Team to further develop the school and to ensure that all the children receive the best possible education. The role is demanding but training and support are provided. We have six full governing body meetings a year. Our two committees meet once or twice per term and each governor is involved in at least one learning walk a year. Governors are also involved in appointing staff. Skills in procurement/purchasing, premises/facilities management, links with local businesses or knowledge of the local or regional economy would be useful but commitment and willingness to learn are at least as important. If you are interested, please leave your contact details at the school office for Helen Richardson, one of our Co-Chairs of Governors.
Thank you to Gary Dixon for the service that he has given to our Governing Body during his term of office.

LORIC Skills for Life - Communication
Fri 11 Jan 2019So far this year we have been focusing on LORIC skill of Organisation. We have been delighted to see the impact of this work and we continue to be impressed by children showing us their new skills. This half term, we will be working with Charlie Communication! It's important to remember how essential communication is in all areas of life and we will be exploring together how we can develop these skills in different scenarios; from playing with our friends, to having the confidence to communicate more formally in lessons by sharing our thinking with a friend, a group or the whole class. Listening is a big part of being a good communicator therefore we will also be exploring how we can develop this skill and discussing why listening is crucial to success. Look out for stickers and achievement stars as we celebrate communication skills across school! -
Year 1 Unicef Christmas Project
Fri 21 Dec 2018Year 1 is participating in a Unicef project which enables schools to send Christmas presents to vulnerable children around the world. As part of their learning in PSHE, the classes visited a virtual shop on the Unicef website to learn about the presents that are available to send and why the children might want those presents. They then voted for their favourite present and used their maths skills to create a bar chart which showed the results of the vote. The children decided to send 400 pencils and several boxes of high energy biscuits to a school. If you have a child in Year 1, be sure to ask them to tell you why they made these choices. Mrs Wright and Mr Metcalf will purchase the gifts through the website and Paddington Bear will be sending each class a lovely thank you letter. -
Christingle Services
Fri 21 Dec 2018We were amazed by the response to our Christingle collection. Donations poured into school all throughout December and the total so far is over £783. The children in Years 1-6 attended a special Christingle service at St Mary’s Church and the children in Early Years have had a service in front of the Christmas tree here in school. Thank you for supporting this project. All proceeds will be going to The Children’s Society and will be used to help vulnerable young people. -

School Choir at Costa Coffee, Grainger Market, Sainsburys and Rosewood Villa
Fri 14 Dec 2018On Thursday 13th December, the Throckley Primary School choir performed in the Grainger Market and Costa Coffee, Market Street, singing Christmas carols and spreading Christmas cheer around Newcastle. The ten girls from years 4-6 were happy to be performing in front of an audience for the first time since joining choir club in September. They even sang outside Costa, right across from the Theatre Royal! Costa were very kind and provided all the girls with hot chocolate and flakes to warm back up after a day of Christmas caroling.
On Monday 17th December, the full choir of children from years 1 - 6 brought Christmas cheer to the Throckley community with performances at our local Sainsbury’s and for the residents at Rosewood Villa.
