RHS Five Star Gardening School Award
Fri 10 Jan 2020In April of this year, Mr Elliott commenced a project which is bringing our allotment back to life with the aim of helping pupils in school become aware of, and take care of, their own physical and mental health as well as tackling our worldwide plastic pollution epidemic.
As a result of a fantastic first year, we have secured our target of all five of the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘School Gardening Awards’ through accomplishments such as: composting, growing our own produce, harvesting this for use in the school canteen (we have eaten some freshly harvested cabbages with our lunch today!), hosting a RHS ‘Big Soup Share’ (made from our own Leeks) and entering our local leek show! This five star award grants us a very prestigious accreditation.
A big well done to all of the children involved! An exciting future in our allotment awaits …

Fri 20 Dec 2019Our school choir has been out spreading Christmas cheer across the community with visits to Dewley House and Hadrian House to sing Christmas carols with the residents. The choir also gave a special performance on Thursday afternoon for parents and carers who were collecting their children from school. Thank you for your generous donations. The choir has raised £92 which will be used to buy new instruments for music lessons in the Spring Term. -
Christingle Service
Fri 20 Dec 2019Nursery to Y6 took part in a Christingle service this year led by Allison Harding, the vicar from St Mary's Church. She was very impressed with the children for knowing what each part of the Christingle represented; the orange to represent the world, the red tape to represent Jesus' blood, the cocktail sticks to represent the four seasons, the sweeties to represent God's creations and finally, the candle to represent Jesus as the light of the world. We all sang carols together and were given the option to join in with a prayer to wish each other a safe and happy Christmas. We have raised £410 through your generous donations. All proceeds will be going to The Children’s Society.

Congratulations to Mr Kidger
Fri 13 Dec 2019Message from Mrs Stuart:
After working at Throckley Primary School for 14 years and as my Deputy Head Teacher for over 5 years, I am immensely proud but also very sad to say that Darren Kidger will be leaving Throckley for an 18th month secondment from 31st December this year. His new role will be as an advisor for the School Effectiveness Team at Newcastle City Council. This is a fantastic opportunity for him as he will be working with primary and secondary schools across the whole of the city to support the development of mathematics teaching and learning.
During his time away, Lynsey Giblin and Julia Brown will act up as Deputy Head Teachers with Ellie Sewell as acting Assistant Head Teacher until his return in September 2021.
I feel very fortunate and privileged to have worked with such a fantastic teacher and leader as well as such a trustworthy and kind man. Darren is an integral part of the ongoing success of the school and although he will be such a huge miss, his mentoring and coaching means that he has paved the way for other leaders to follow in his footsteps.
Mr Kidger will remain as an associate member to the school's governing body during his secondment so luckily he will never be too far away! On behalf of all the staff, governors, parents and pupils, I would like to say THANK YOU Mr Kidger and GOOD LUCK. We will all miss you dearly!

Y6 Circulatory and Cardiac Function Science Lesson
Fri 13 Dec 2019This week, Year 6, as part of their study of ‘Animals, including humans’, continued their investigation of the human circulatory system and cardiac function. The children delved further than ever before by observing the dissection of an ox’s heart. Firstly, the intrepid scientists carried out a risk assessment to ensure that everyone stayed safe during the lesson. The children then noted the thick, dark red muscle and crumbly white fat on the outside of the heart. Then, with great care, the heart was sliced open to reveal the principal chambers (ventricles and atria) and major blood vessels (vena cava and aorta). They followed the blood’s path with string to demonstrate circulation. Hopefully it was an experience they will never forget! -
