• Year 5 Re-enactment of the Battle of Newburn Ford

  On Wednesday, Year 5 re-enacted the Battle of Newburn Ford: 1640 and a prelude to the    English Civil War. With (paper) canon balls, the Scots (5B) adopted the high ground whereas the English (5G) found defending the lower ground more challenging. They soon learnt that choice of tactics and understanding your local area make all the difference - excellent strategic critique, Year 5!

   

  

• Throckley Primary In Northern Gas Networks Safety Film

  Northern Gas Networks are due to begin some mains replacement work in Throckley in the near future. This felt like an excellent time to educate our children about the importance of staying safe around maintenance work and further gas safety. We were offered an exciting opportunity as part of this work - to be part of a promotional video that Northern Gas Networks will use as part of their advertising and in school work.  Alex and Nick came in to school to work with a small group of Y2 children to deliver one of the key messages - safety! They are very much looking forward to    coming back in to school to work with more children and to deliver a virtual assembly which will offer a range of activities for everyone!

   

  

• Microbe Science Lesson in Year 6

  As part of Year 6’s Science lessons about living things (particularly microbes), and to link in with our Spooky Writing Week, we investigated the decomposition of fruit using pumpkins. We          designed our own ‘fair test’ style investigation to see how we could preserve the pumpkins. First, we completed a full risk assessment of the investigation and decided we needed to wear goggles and gloves to prevent any toxic substances touching our skin. After this, when we were sure we could be safe, we carved our pumpkins and painted a fine coating of a liquid (water, yoghurt, bleach, lemon juice, milk or vinegar) around the inside of our pumpkin. We can’t wait to find out which pumpkin will survive!

   

  

• Intraclass PE Competitions in Year 3

  We are continuing to look for ways to provide our children with opportunities for sporting        competitions here in school.  This week, Mr Elliott’s and Mr Davidson’s  Year 3 classes engaged in a fun filled series of competitive games during an intraclass PE competition.  Pupils competed in class teams and encouraged each other, whilst learning to show sportsmanship towards the opposition throughout.

   

  

• Virtual Harvest Assembly

  This week, we have received a special video message from Reverend Allison Harding. She has shared the message of harvest with us and explained how fortunate we are to have lovely food to eat. We would usually use this time of year to collect donations for the West End Food Bank.  Unfortunately, due to current restrictions we are unable to collect your donations in school.  We would like to take this opportunity to encourage families, where possible, to make a small donation to the food bank using the donation points at your local supermarket (Sainsbury's in Throckley have a donation point).

   

  The urgently needed items are:  Tea bags, instant coffee, sugar (500g), biscuits, cereal, pasta, rice, UHT or powdered milk, long life fruit juices, pasta sauces, tinned - meat, fish, fruit,           vegetables and rice pudding.

   

   

  

• Reception's Notting Hill Carnival!

  Reception have had the most exciting week learning about Black History Month!  The Notting Hill Carnival was started by Claudia Jones in 1959 to bring unity rather than the race riots.  The children have been working hard to create their own carnival by using tools to make feather headpieces, sequin masks, glittery threaded necklaces and paper chains to decorate the classroom.  The carnival took place on the yard with lots of music, the instruments we had made for homework and even more dancing!

  This week, Year 5 came up with their own investigation to see how wind speed affected the rate of pollination in plants. Using a hair dryer, they explored the way pollen (or cous-cous!) dispersal was increased by a greater wind speed. They recorded their own results and made brilliantly reasoned conclusions to build on this fascinating branch of biology next week.

• Snail Week in Nursery

  Last Friday we discovered a snail in the Nursery garden! The children were fascinated and watched it moving around and popping in and out of its shell. We decided to change our plans and use the excitement of the snail to drive our learning for the following week. Nursery have been reading the book 'Snail Trail' by Ruth Brown and completing lots of snail themed activities. 'The Snail' by Henri Matisse has also been used to inspire some artwork. We have had a great week!  

• Head Boy & Girl Elections

  On Wednesday, the children at Throckley Primary were able to witness our Head Boy and Girl candidates read their speeches through a virtual assembly.  All of the speeches were so inspiring and filled with excellent reasons why they should be elected.  The children across school then  participated in an election in their classes, giving them a real-life experience of the British Value of Democracy.  The results of the election are as follows:  Head Girl: Caitlin, Head Boy: Wei-Jai, Deputy Head Girl: Lucy, Deputy Head Boy: Sam, School Council Representatives:  Daniel G,  Daniel S, Ella and Ebony.
