Fri 14 Feb 2020Throckley are champions once again! After a few close matches in the early stages, Throckley emerged the winners of the OWL KS2 Basketball competition. Learn to Play Tennis
Fri 14 Feb 2020Pupils from Years 3-6 took part in a tennis challenge event at Sunderland's specialist tennis centre on Wednesday! Mr Elliott and Mrs Wright were so impressed with how the pupils conducted themselves. They had such an amazing morning and it was a real pleasure to see how much they enjoyed themselves developing not only their physical skills, but also their social skills and confidence. Physical Education and sport are such powerful vehicles for developing well-rounded pupils. We definitely have a few budding tennis stars in our midst! -
Safer Internet Day 2020
Fri 14 Feb 2020We have had a busy week of exploring and learning about how we can all work together for a better internet. All of the children have watched a special internet safety film which was made by some of the children in the OWL schools. This was followed by a whole school Bunting Challenge. Each class had a group discussion about their similarities and differences and then the children designed a bunting flag while thinking about the following questions: Who likes or does similar things to you online? Who likes or does different things? Is it OK to like different things? How does what you do online represent who you are? The individual flags have been joined together and we now have Safer Internet Day bunting to decorate our upstairs IT Suites. We are pleased that so many of you were able to join us for the parent/carer event and we hope that the session was both enjoyable and useful. It is so important that we all work together to make the internet safer for children. -
BEE Netball Event
Fri 07 Feb 2020Children from Years 5 & 6 competed in a BEE netball event at Walker Activity Dome and represented the school extremely well with great attitudes and sportsmanship on display. Although we didn’t make it to the next round, we played some impressive netball at times, which was commented on by the umpire. Well done to all involved! -
Duffy Football League
Fri 07 Feb 2020Our penultimate Duffy league was a tough one; the wind made playing any kind of real football a challenge! The boys performed well under the circumstances and after four very tight games, came away with one win, one draw and a two defeats. Roll on March for a final outing of the season; well done boys! -

Fri 07 Feb 2020Some of our children visited Percy Hedley School for a fun-packed morning of activities such as: Boccia, Sitting Volleyball and New-Age Curling. The children all had fantastic smiles throughout and clearly had a great time. They performed so well that they scored enough points to be invited to the county finals! A huge well done! -
GEM Education Working in Years 4 & 5
Fri 07 Feb 2020Year 4 was very lucky to have Mr Hughes working with our class to look at online safety and discuss body image. First we looked at a range of online social media apps and what’s good vs what’s bad about using them. The main part of the session was spent looking at how photos are changed by people before they post them online. Having looked at some examples and discussed what people had changed and why, the children then had a go at changing photos on the iPads. This hands-on experience showed them how easily photos can be manipulated to not portray reality and how we should be happy with the way we naturally look rather than feeling pressured to look like photos that aren’t real.
Year 5 worked with GEM education and looked at how we stay safe online and be a good digital citizen. Children watched a number of videos which had important messages about being kind to one another on an online community.

Time to Talk Day
Fri 07 Feb 20206th February was Time to Talk Day – a day when everyone at school was encouraged to have a conversation about mental health. We displayed posters around school to encourage conversations in an attempt to break the stigma and raise awareness of mental health. Children in Years 1 & 2 talked to their peers to find out what can make them feel happier at times when they feel sad. Y3 had a class assembly around the topic of mental health and discussed why it is just as important as our physical health. Y5 teachers encouraged the children to write down any worries/thoughts that they have that they would like to talk about. Each week they are going to look at a couple and generate talk as a whole class. Y6 took part in a true or false quiz to help to dispel a few popular misconceptions about mental health. -
NSPCC Number Day 2020
Fri 07 Feb 2020Nursery completed lots of number-based activities, introducing children to the numerals in different contexts and finished the day with a number song disco!
Reception made number hats and played a selection of number-related games, which covered recognising numerals, matching amounts and numerals.
Year 1 celebrated number day by completing number themed art, PE and ICT. They also took part in some extra number challenges.
Year 2 played a game of ‘who wants to be mathionaire’ and then did some practical investigations using the multiplication skills we have been developing within our lessons.
Year 3 took part in a Mary Anning themed code breaking maths lesson which linked to their learning in Science. They worked out the value of a range of 'curiosities' and then used these to solve various maths calculations. Who will be the chief code-breaker?!
Year 4 carried out two investigations to answer the following questions: Can taller people jump further? and Is your arm span the same as your height? Children designed their own methods for finding the answers, recording and presenting the information and we analysed which methods are the most accurate.
Year 5 designed playground games for the KS1 and KS2 yards using chalk to create their games on the ground for the whole school to play! They also carried out a fraction treasure hunt.
Year 6 spent time unwinding the mysteries of Suguru: simple to understand, complex to solve! Literally meaning 'number groups' in Japanese, solvers aimed to fill a grid with numbers. Using algebra, the children determined the highest value digit that can fill each cell before arranging them so that no identical digits touch horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The children also explored the significance of the numbers in their lives and created a unique poem called ‘My Life in Numbers’.

Earthquake in Year 4!
Fri 31 Jan 2020As part of their enquiry question, ‘Just how powerful is our natural world?’, Y4 have conducted an experiment which involved designing and building a structure that was ‘earthquake-proof’. Using what they have learned about architectural techniques which help buildings to survive an earthquake, they designed their structures to have wide bases, X shapes and deep foundations. They then tested how their structures performed during a simulated earthquake which was actually a tray full of jelly that wobbled like the earth’s surface. If your child is in Y4, be sure to ask them about the techniques that they used and how their structure survived the earthquake!
