Year 4 - Digestive System - 23.05.18.

We are exploring the digestive system in Science. We completed an experiment which mimicked the digestive system and how it works! We started with the food and ended up with our ‘body’ going to the toilet!

Firstly, we put our food into a sealed bag, the mouth.

Then, we poured in water which represented the saliva.

After that, we squashed the food, acting as the teeth.

Then, we pretended the food went down the oesophagus and into the stomach. We poured orange juice in, representing the acid.

As soon as the acid was mixed, we poured the stomach contents into the small intestine. We used tights to represent this.

As we did this, the liquids poured through the walls of the tights into the dish. This is to represent the nutrients being absorbed through the walls of the small intestine, into the body.

We then acted as a muscle, pushing the waste food down the small intestine, into the large intestine and into the paper cup, which represents the rectum.

The muscles in our rectum then push the waste food out of the anus.
