Purpose of Study
Personal, social, health and economic education underpin the philosophy and practice at Throckley Primary. We promote pupils’ personal social and emotional development, as well as their health and wellbeing. It helps to give children the knowledge and skills they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. It gives children an understanding of the rights and responsibilities that are part of being a good citizen and introduces them to some of the principles of prudent financial planning and understanding.
Whilst the school’s PSHE programme is planned and delivered throughout the curriculum, this policy assumes that it is supported and reinforced by the ethos of the school itself. It is a responsibility to be shared by governors, teachers, support staff and parents.
The school accepts the importance of remaining sensitive to a child’s individual needs while recognising the pupils’ variety of backgrounds, experiences and stages of development. With this in mind, at Throckley Primary school, we have designed a personalised programme of study to meet the needs of our pupils.
Aims and Objectives
Throckley Primary School, in consultation with a variety of agencies and using the results from our Health Related Behaviour survey, has produced this programme of study based on the needs of our pupils. Our programme of study identifies the key concepts and skills that underpin PSHE education and help our school to fulfil our statutory responsibility to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.
At Throckley Primary School we believe that the personal, social and health development of each child, in conjunction with their citizenship skills, has a significant role in their ability to learn. We value the importance of PSHE and Citizenship in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. In addition we believe that a child needs to learn about the many emotional aspects of life and how to manage their own emotions.
The overarching aim for PSHE education is to provide pupils with:
accurate and relevant knowledge
opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding
opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities
the skills and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.

In addition to this, we will also support our children to develop key life skills through the use of The Primary Edge and the LORIC family. The attributes that have been identified as being crucial in the wider world of work are:
Our children will spend time each half term, through assemblies and lessons, developing their knowledge and understanding of each of the key attributes in the hope that the children develop not only as independent learners, but confident young people who are prepared for the next steps in their lives.
At Throckley Primary School we have an active school council and expect teachers to aim to set aside time in class to discuss matters arising from school council meetings.
